Oregon man expected to survive wood chipper accident
Updated 4:02 pm, Saturday, February 13, 2016
LEABURG, Ore. (AP) An Oregon man is expected to survive being pulled head-first into a wood chipper thanks to his helmet and his foot catching a safety bar.
The Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/1oe7AYx) the man is in his 20s and was taken to a hospital Friday afternoon with trauma to the back of his head and a broken leg.
Officials say the man was wearing a harness rope that became entangled in the wood going into the chipper. He was pulled into the chipper, with his foot catching the safety bar that turns off the machine just as his head came up against the chipper blades.
Firefighter Matt Brooks says the man's helmet likely assisted in his survival.

Is this a good time for Republicans to raise hell regarding Democrats' work for safety regulations which require things like helmets and safety bars? After all, shouldn't he have been free to NOT wear his helmet, or catch his foot on a freedom-inhibiting safety bar?

It is not safe to have any dangling items hanging off your body when working around machinery. Jewelry, long hair, straps, lanyards etc.

(8,175 posts)And I was told about a woman with long hair that got wrapped about a spindle on her sewing machine, and it pulled her head to the machine and held it there and ripped a huge hole out of her scalp. I can't remember if she lived or died, but it taught me a very important lesson at an early age, and I've never taken any kind of machinery for granted. I'm always careful what I wear around machinery. And that my hair is out of the way.
I worked with a woman who was not as careful. She and her hubby were having sex and after they got the munchies. She went into the kitchen, naked, and for some reason decided to make whipped cream. Maybe they were going to have sundays or something...I can't remember. But she got her boob caught in the mixer blades. Had to go to the ER to have them untangle her.
Wood chippers (the big ones especially) scare the crap out of me. I wish I had one, but if I did, I'd probably be afraid to use it. The little ones I can handle, but they can't handle the kind of wood I need to clean up here regularly.
I sure hope the guy's head damage was not too severe. I really hope he makes a full recovery. That had to be the most terrifying experience. I would have PTSD for sure.

(1,786 posts)Mixer Blades + Boob...OMG, OMG the poor lady. To go from the previous event to that...yikes!!
Yes- I have seen some humans get pretty messed up. Gunshots, high velocity impacts with vehicles, falling from high up, burns. Even a individual who was not paying attention during a 757 pushback and the nose gear ran him over. But the worst was the individual with a long pony tail that got caught in a lathe and ripped his scalp / face off to the neck. He did not live.
You are correct. Never ever ever never take machinery for granted no matter how many times you use it. As you point out above even a simple mixer in the kitchen can change your reality for life in a matter of seconds.
On a brighter side Happy Valentines Day! I hope you are having a good weekend.
