Texas A&M has launched an investigation after complaints that black high school students were racially abused on a visit to the college campus on Tuesday.
About 60 juniors from a public charter school in south Dallas that mainly caters to low-income, minority students were on a tour when they were approached by about a dozen white students.
The initial confrontation began when a white female student approached two female African American Uplift Hampton students to ask their opinion of her earrings, which were Confederate flag replicas, said Royce West, a Texas senator from Dallas who was informed of the incident by the chancellor of A&M.
This was exacerbated by a group of white male and female students, who within earshot of the first event, told a larger group of the high school visitors, part of the Road to College at Uplift Education Program, to Go back where you came from.

(11,364 posts)... that their precious confederate flag is all about "heritage, not hate", isn't it?
They should be expelled for this.

(13,421 posts)My daughter goes to college that is part of the A & M system. She's at Texas A&M at Corpus Christi. She says the students' view is that all the different A & M schools have different personalities and populations. Hers is viewed as the surfer/slacker campus and the one at College Station is where the rednecks and hicks go. From what I have observed of her friends and the faculty, I'm not sure how accurate that image is, but she's in Pre-Med, so they are maybe not typical of all programs. To be equally fair, the College Station campus is still the one that people in several of the programs transfer to--so it must have its attractions to the right student. (Could be a fondness for the kkk for all I know, but it's TEXAS--land of the wackaloon politicians...)
She's getting out of the entire state of Texas next fall. She's transferring to an Illinois University. Given our budget mess in Illinois and how much funding to colleges is suffering, I have mixed feelings about that plan--even if I am happy to have her back within a few hours' drive from home.

(14,947 posts)How absolutely rotten to do this. Someday we may get past this racist bullshit but it won't be in our lifetimes. I do believe these people are in the minority and they get called out for this behavior more and more.
