McCotter Calls It Quits
June 2, 2012 5:45 PM

LIVONIA (WWJ) -Thaddeus McCotter ends his write-in campaign and says his sole focus as U.S. Representative is finishing his term and aiding his requested Attorney General probe.

“I have ended my write-in campaign in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District,” announced McCotter in an email sent to WWJ Newsradio 950 on Saturday.

“One can’t clean up a mess multitasking. Honoring my promise to the sovereign people of our community only allows me to finish the official duties of my present Congressional term; and aid the State Attorney General criminal investigation that I requested into identifying the person or persons who concocted the fraudulent petitions that have cost me so dearly.

The Michigan Congressman, a republican from Livonia, has announced that he will not seek re-election as a write in candidate for the 11th Congressional District which includes parts of Wayne and Oakland counties.

A week ago, this seat was a lock for the GOP.

Now, not so much.

State probes McCotter petition
Such 'overt massive potential fraud is ... very rare,' ex-AG says
By Marisa Schultz
The Detroit News

A criminal probe into doctored petitions for U.S. Rep. Thad McCotter may be uncharted territory as officials say they've never encountered such widespread signature problems.

About 87 percent of McCotter's signatures to get on the primary ballot were tossed because of duplicated copies and apparent copying and pasting of past signatures on his nominating petitions which the state's election chief said Tuesday was "frankly unheard of."

"No one has heard of anything so over the top before," echoed former Republican Attorney General Mike Cox. He added: "To have really overt massive potential fraud is really very unusual."

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's office had turned over preliminary findings to Attorney General Bill Schuette's office, which won't comment. But Cox said investigators have tools working in their favor — a stack of paper evidence, names and signatures of circulators and the power of an investigative subpoena to compel circulators to talk.

"Ruth and Bill are going to have to go to where the facts go, whether that leads them to (McCotter's staff) or to Thad," said Cox, who said he won't run as a write-in for the McCotter seat. He said his family and the McCotters are close, but now he is for "anybody but Thad."

"I have ended my write-in campaign in Michigan's 11th Congressional District," McCotter said in a statement released Saturday afternoon.

"One can't clean up a mess multitasking," McCotter said in his statement. "Honoring my promise to the sovereign people of our community only allows me to finish the official duties of my present Congressional term; and aid the State Attorney General criminal investigation that I requested into identifying the person or persons who concocted the fraudulent petitions that have cost me so dearly.

"Honoring this promise does not allow me to continue a political write-in campaign. This decision is final, regardless of how swiftly the investigation is concluded," he said.

"To those unhappy at this news, I'm sorry; to those happy at this news, you're welcome," McCotter concluded.

7. Don't let the guitar hit you on the way out Congressman McCotter
Sat Jun 2, 2012, 07:14 PM

From the Detroit Free Press:

McCotter ran a little-noticed Republican presidential campaign last year before asking voters to re-elect him to his congressional seat. He surprised everyone late last month when he announced the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office had determined he didn’t have the 1,000 valid signatures needed to get on the Aug. 7 primary ballot, even though 2,000 signatures were turned in.

A spokesman for the secretary of state has said only a couple hundred signatures appeared valid and many seemed to be copies.

McCotter initially said he would conduct a write-in campaign, while seeking an investigation into happened with his petitions. But today, he issued a statement he was ending his candidacy because he could not cooperate with the investigation into the invalid signatures as well as fulfill his current duties and run a write-in campaign.

Michigan Republican Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's voter suppression measure called the "Safe and Fair Voter Initiative", with the assistance of Michigan's Republican Controlled Legislative branches, are pushing though SB 751, 754 & 803 claiming these voter suppression bills are supposed to stop "voter fraud"....

But really, these "bills" are to stop Michiganders choices of who and/or what to support, and vote for during our August 7th Primary and the November 6, 2012 General Election.

Because this is just pathetic. This guy thought he could be President (for reasons no one can fathom). And look at him now, incumbent for around a decade and unable to gather a few thousand signatures.
