Michigan Supreme Court clears way to let Detroiters vote on legalizing marijuana

After a nearly two-year legal battle, the Michigan Supreme Court cleared the way Friday for a referendum question that could make Detroit the state's first city to legalize marijuana.

Voters in the Aug. 7 primary election can expect to see the question -- asking them to legalize possession and use of up to 1 ounce of the drug, on private property, by those 21 and older, said Tim Beck, a Detroiter who heads the referendum group Coalition for a Safer Detroit.

"A long trail of voter abuse by the City of Detroit has come to an end," said Beck, 60, in an e-mail to supporters.

"We got everything right. Our petitions were flawless," said Beck, a medical-marijuana user who owns Michigan Benefit Providers, a Detroit consulting firm.

In a brief order Friday, the Supreme Court denied the city's motion for immediate consideration of its appeal.

And most likely, Oregon, too.

Other states that have initiative signature-gathering campaigns underway are Montana, Michigan, and Nebraska, in descending order of likelihood of making the ballot.

Marijuana legalization medical & recreational is a foregone conclusion & long overdue. The war on those who prefer marijuana to alcohol is a complete failure costing billions of dollars & making criminals out of millions of otherwise law abiding citizens. Prohibition has bred contempt for law enforcement, made millions for drug dealers & made the streets of our cities less not more safe. Politicians who continue to put their personal biases before the will of their constituents do so at their own political peril. While legalized marijuana failed to get the required votes from California voters in 2010 it did get more votes than Meg Whitman who spent over $160 million dollars on her campaign for Governor. President Obama should keep in mind he can't win re-election without the support of these voters. Furthermore a handful of disgruntled marijuana enthusiasts who decide to withhold their votes in swing states could decide this election. If I were a Republican strategist I'd surreptitiously encourage those angered by Obama's stance to vote for former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson or to not vote for President at all in protest ! While gays were already protected from discrimination by federal law, marijuana users are still under attack by those who promised to leave us alone ! Ironically the first President to speak openly about his own inhaling may become a one term President by preventing us from doing the same !
