BERNIE SANDERS TO MEET WITH REV. AL SHARPTON IN NEW YORK
Source: WABC-TV
NEW YORK -- Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders plans to meet with the Rev. Al Sharpton over breakfast in New York City.
The meeting will take place Wednesday morning at the famed Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem.
The Vermont senator swept to victory in Tuesday's New Hampshire primaries, gathering a majority of votes from men, independents and voters under 45, as well as a slim majority of women.
Tuesday night's win for Sanders completes his rise from presidential long shot to legitimate challenger for the Democratic nomination against Hillary Clinton.

(34,136 posts)Sharpton is not endorsing Sanders - but he is also not endorsing Hillary - YET.
He said that he's waiting until the meeting with the National Action Network where they will decide who the organization is going to endorse.
Sharpton did say that he and Sanders had a discussion about economic inequality and that Sanders reminisced about marching with Martin Luther King in Chicago.
I missed part of the interview since I was on the phone and only caught those parts while I was on hold. But those points seemed important to me.

(12,977 posts)That's less of a margin than he won by over all, but hardly "a slim majority." It's the same percentage as Barack Obama's victory over John McCain in 2008, which was seen as a substantial victory.
I hate spin.

(1,178 posts)I just can't help it. I understand that Sharpton has an important place in African American politics and I generally agree with his political positions. I just can't get the fact that he never apologized to Steven Pagones for ruining his life with his defamatory statements regarding the Tawanna Brawley case (for you younger people, look it up - it was a big story at the time). A simple apology would go a long way.

i rather admire him

(4,462 posts)including his active participation in events like the Crown Heights riots and Freddie's Fashion Mart. To a great many people, particularly otherwise very liberal Jewish New Yorker's, Sharpton is pure political poison.
Bernie's meeting with Sharpton is reason alone for me and others to consider not voting for him in the primary.

(4,462 posts)is a heck of a lot more than a simple "mistake," and any 15 year old would know such conduct was unacceptable.
Moreover, Sharpton's self-aggrandizing antics and other malfeasance extend well beyond the Brawley fiasco, as even the most cursory Google search amply demonstrates, such as his involvement in the Crown Heights riots and Freddie's Fashion Mart deaths.
You may like or admire Sharpton, but a great many people feel quite the opposite, including liberal and loyal Democrats. Given his failure to acknowledge, no less apologize or attempt to atone for much of the harm he's caused, we feel no need to forgive or forget.

(1,859 posts)BLM is refusing to support any candidate this primary season, but, may during the election. It's harder for them because there are many groups that make up BLM.
Al Sharpton is smart to get with Bernie before he is president. I hope Bernie will have black leaders around a lot more into his campaign and presidency than Barack Obama has. I felt like Obama distanced himself from them until 2015. And I think they have a whole lot to offer on intelligent and fair civil policy. They need to be in the presidents cabinet for that reason.

(1,033 posts)I know their former chairman recently endorsed Sanders but I can't find a link indicating the NAACP has endorsed Sanders, or either does or does not support Sanders.

(1,859 posts)I thought he said during the broadcast yesterday on Democracy Now that the NAACP endorses Sanders too. Checking.
Nope, not definitive. There is not an NAACP endorsement yet. I will correct my other post as it will mislead.

(1,033 posts)It seems to me the NAACP doesn't formally endorse anyone, at least in the primaries.
