NRA board member Ted Nugent posted a photo of Jewish leaders on his Facebook page today with the caption “So who is really behind gun control?” alleging that “these punks” support stricter gun laws because they “hate freedom.” Just to drive home the point that the pictured activists and politicians are Jewish, the photo includes an Israeli flag emblem by each person’s face. “Tell every1 you know how evil they are,” Nugent wrote. “Let us raise maximum hell to shut them down!” The leaders listed include the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.); Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.); Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.); Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.); Sen. Mark Levin (D-Mich.); Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.); Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel; former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg; attorney and pundit Alan Dershowitz; Boston developer John Rosenthal, who founded the group Stop Handgun Violence; Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence; and Max Nacheman, the former executive director of CeaseFire PA. This isn’t Nugent’s first foray into anti-Semitic imagery.

Ted Nugent's Anti-Semitic Meltdown Continues

Musician and NRA board member Ted Nugent is receiving criticism from civil rights group and praise from white nationalists after posting multiple anti-Semitic rants on his Facebook page this week. But, as Timothy Johnson of Media Matters notes, Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign is “still touting praise” from Nugent.

Nugent, who in the last few days suggested that gun reform is an evil Jewish plot, portrayed Jewish leaders as Nazis paving the way for the next Holocaust and mocked Holocaust victims as “soulless sheep,” has now engaged in several debates on his Facebook page over his remarks.

In one debate, Nugent defended himself by saying that he was a war hero in the Iraq War.



Nugent did not serve in the Iraq War, although he did meet with troops in Iraq alongside fellow musician Toby Keith as part of a USO tour. There is a running debate as to whether Nugent faked a medical exam in order to avoid the Vietnam War draft.

The conservative entertainer also criticized a Jewish gun group, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, for issuing a statement condemning his “deeply anti-Semitic comments.”

In his response, Nugent condemned the group’s “sad bullshit” and said that if he had lived in Nazi Germany, he would have helped lead “the charge to disarm Nazis and kill them with their own Lugers.”

In that a lot of the claims are the political equivalent of the "Boy Who Cried Wolf." It cheapens the claim for when it is real (Dana Milbank, I am looking at you.)

But this is beyond the pale, for many reasons.

Just to point a few things out:

1. Most of these Jewish Americans aren't particularly Zionist. So not sure why the Israeli flag.

2. Yes, there are a lot of Jewish liberals. But they are greatly outnumbered by non-Jewish liberals. In fact, if every American Jewish person voted Republican in every Presidential race (excepting Bush/Gore, which who knows), no Presidential election would have changed. We're talking 1.7% of the population. So why list just Jewish people?

3. Has he ever been to Israel? It's not exactly anti-gun. Everyone is in the military, by default and necessity. My son made aliyah. My 18 year old great-granddaughter packs a Tavor (that's a bullpup machine gun) pretty much everywhere. I have a class picture from kinder and the sweet little kinder teacher was carrying an M16 because of all the recent stabbings. It's a dangerous neighborhood and guns are just an unfortunate part of that.
