The Republican governor largely used the address to drive home the same talking points he has stuck to for the past year: He called for welfare reform, lower income taxes, more drug agents and higher pay for state police to fight Maines drug crisis.
Among the few surprises in the address were details on LePages plan for fighting student debt which he has teased at recent town hall meetings. He called for a $10 million state bond for interest-free student loans and said employers who pay off student loans should receive equivalent tax credits.
But the address was most notable for its 12 references to socialism. He said efforts by Maine socialists to turn our state into Greece, Cuba, Venezuela or the former Soviet Union are moving us backwards at a rapid pace.
