US military abuse scandal: Pentagon releases 198 prisoner photos

Source: BBC

Nearly 200 photographs linked to allegations of abuse by the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan over a decade ago have been released by the Pentagon.

The photos were released in response to a freedom of information request by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The images show mainly bruises and cuts on prisoners' arms and legs.

The abuse scandal erupted in 2004 when shocking photos emerged of US soldiers appearing to sexually humiliate and torture detainees in Iraq's Abu Ghraib.

We are not simple children who need to be protected from disturbing realities.

We are adults, and we need to know what our government is doing.

None of the photos released on Friday involved detainees held in Abu Ghraib or at the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Pentagon said.

The ACLU has been fighting for more than a decade for the release of what it says are 2,000 photos documenting abuse at US detention centres. It said it would continue to fight for publication of the remaining 1,800.

I remember at the time the first shocking Abu Ghraib photos were release, there was acknowledgment of a large number (I don't remember now) of photos and films that were described by congressional member who had seen them as too shocking and disturbing to release. A report came later that they were destroyed - probably a crime. I read it all here on DU.

Does anyone remember this cover up being reported.

memory - out of sight out of mind....so Pentagon -just keep it coming...we need reminders - why we do NOT NEED a republican in the White House -- or any right wing Supreme Court Justices....

Along with this report, the airing of one of the most devastating affects on the United States credibility globally, tomorrow Jebby has decided to add G Dubya to the mix...during the Super Bowl no less....yep, just a reminder fellow Americans...

I said it months ago - the establishment will do anything to bring Bush to the top..they have a very long way to go - big mistake..huge!

Christie is a bully...NO BULLYS - DUMP, I'm going to sue you, Trump, Oily sleazy Cruz - NOPE - and Rubio????? GET REAL! - as well, THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER BUSH AND COMPANY IN THE WH..just have to look at his foreign intelligence (which offends our intelligence) advisors....same disgusting thugs as G DUBYA!

I make my case for voting for who, the Democratic Convention nominates.....be well all!

was exposed to the public and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for war crimes.

So now we can rest easy knowing it will never happen again.
