NEW YORK (AP) Maurice White, the founder and leader of Earth, Wind & Fire, has died.
White died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, said his brother, Verdine White. He was 74.
A former session drummer, White founded Earth, Wind & Fire in the late 1960s. The group went on to sell more than 90 million albums worldwide, displaying a flashy and eclectic musical style that incorporated his influences from growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, and workinEarg at the influential Chicago music labels Chess and Okeh.
The band's many hits included "September," ''Shining Star," a cover of the Beatles' "Got to Get You into My Life" and "Boogie Wonderland." Earth, Wind & Fire won six Grammys and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

(10,495 posts)I guess that I am at the age where all of my favorite artists are passing on. Very sad!
I started my DJ business with 2 other buddies at age 12 when we realized we sacked as a band. Started playing our junior high dances at the local YMCA. Kept it up until I finished law school and my wife wanted her living room back (full of speakers, lights, records, console, etc.). From Disco to 90's grunge. Earth Wind & Fire were a big early staple. Amazing talent!

(19,986 posts)Was watching France24 a little while ago when they announced his passing and played a long clip of EWF's "September" video. Having played in a couple brass bands myself back in the day, I always loved the song. Really classy stuff.
Thanks, Maurice!

Take you high and higher to the world you belong
Hearts of fire creates love desire
High and higher to your place on the throne
We've come together on this special day
To sing our message loud and clear
Looking back we've touched on sorrowful days
Future pass, they disappear
You will find peace of mind
If you look way down in your heart and soul
Don't hesitate 'cause the world seems cold
Stay young at heart 'cause you're never (never, never, ..) old at heart
That's the way of the world
Plant your flower and you grow a pearl
A child is born with a heart of gold
The way of the world makes his heart grow cold

(6,148 posts)I always wondered what happened to Maurice White.. Now I know, he had Parkinsons. He is gone now, but I will always remember singing his positive songs, the ones that didn't make the charts, but made me feel good inside. My sister and I had SO many of their albums, including Gratitude, of course. My husband sings "Reasons" to me on occasion. Farewell, Maurice. Turn your face to the wind.

Wow. What a loss from an outstanding group that continues to produce amazing music. Damn. They just released a new album a couple years ago too...

(129,053 posts)I got to travel to Abu Simbel in Egypt (it's been almost 25 years ago now) and saw that temple depicted on that album cover. They were always ahead of their time and every new album release was guaranteed to be fantastic!!! And the best part of them is that they are a band that actually plays other instruments (besides the electric guitar/bass & percussion). Something that seems to be novel or even nonexistent nowadays.

Gosh, they're starting to come in droves now, it's starting to feel like almost ... and like we're gonna have YEARS of this to 'look forward' to as our musical heroes pass one by one ... but, please, universe ... please let Sir Paul outlive me ...
