#OregonUnderAttack #OregonStandoff Grand jury indicts 16 in connection with Oregon takeover http://reut.rs/1QdIAH6
A U.S. grand jury returned an indictment on Wednesday against 16 people in connection with the armed occupation of a wildlife refuge in Oregon, prosecutors said.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Portland did not disclose the charges contained in the indictment, which has been sealed, but said it would likely be made public soon. A previous criminal complaint charged 11 former occupiers with conspiracy to impede federal officers.
Indictment is sealed but will be unsealed in 24 hours

... Arraignment was set for Feb. 24. ... In a criminal complaint, defendants have a right to a preliminary hearing in which they can question the arresting officer under oath about probable cause for the charges.
After an indictment, they are no longer entitled to such a proceeding. ....

(2,657 posts)felony murder doctrine
n. a rule of criminal statutes that any death which occurs during the commission of a felony is first degree murder, and all participants in that felony or attempted felony can be charged with and found guilty of murder. A typical example is a robbery involving more than one criminal, in which one of them shoots, beats to death or runs over a store clerk, killing the clerk. Even if the death were accidental, all of the participants can be found guilty of felony murder, including those who did no harm, had no gun, and/or did not intend to hurt anyone. In a bizarre situation, if one of the holdup men or women is killed, his/her fellow robbers can be charged with murder.

Often, it allows US marshals to effect arrests before people learn they are indicted. Not sure intent in this case.

so, what i haven't been telling y'all is for the past 36 hours i've been in communication with the militants at the refuge 1/5
i've called every four hours -- most of these conversations have been short. 2/5
the FBI was concerned about the militants poisoning themselves because they were sleeping in their cars with their engines on 3/5
they're not doing that anymore -- they're also not talking with anyone. I was called about fifteen minutes ago by an unknown number 4/5
and told that as of 12:50, there would be no more external communications -- meaning i can't call in. I was not able to reach them at 1:30.
Note the timing. The refuge was cut off before the indictments were announced, barely.

mmon Bundy, leader of the monthlong armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge, said from jail Thursday that the takeover was "a needed action" and called on state and federal law enforcement officials to leave eastern Oregon.
Bundy's attorneys in Eugene released an audio statement from their client after he learned of his federal indictment ....
"Government officials chose to end our educational efforts with attacks of force and it appears they attempt to do it again," Bundy said in the minute-and-a half statement. "Go home, Oregon State Police. You have already killed enough. Go home, FBI. It is time to end this."
Bundy also said the takeover of the refuge was the "duty of the people," because of perceived injustices .........

Honestly why is it so fucking hard to get that bringing arms to an occupation makes it an armed occupation???? #Oregonstandoff

An Oregon Democrat introduced legislation that would require Ammon Bundy and other out-of-state militants to repay taxpayers for the cost of their armed takeover of a wildlife sanctuary.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer introduced a bill that would require the militants and the federal government to pay back costs associated with the occupation, which the lawmaker estimates at $100,000 a day, reported KOIN-TV.
The bill would require the U.S. Department of Justice to quickly reimburse state and local law enforcement agencies up front for costs associated with responding to the armed takeover.
The U.S. Attorney General would then be allowed sue the militants to recover those costs. ...........
