Florida Governor Declares Emergency Due To Zika
Source: AP
Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a health emergency in four counties of the state because of the Zika virus.
At least nine cases of the mosquito-borne illness have been detected in Florida. Health officials believe all of the cases are from people who contracted the disease while traveling to affected countries.
Scott signed the order Wednesday to cover Miami-Dade, Lee, Hillsborough and Santa Rosa counties.
The Zika virus is linked to brain deformities in babies and is causing concern among public health officials worldwide. The virus is primarily spread through mosquito bites, but investigators had been exploring the possibility it could be sexually transmitted.
U.S. health officials say a person in Texas became infected with Zika through sex in the first case of the illness being transmitted within the United States.

(41,143 posts)an hour ago, 4 PM ET. This CBS local article states that the agriculture dept. will be spraying for mosquitos. That is all I've seen mentioned including an ABC article as of this time. We'll hear more soon, I hope. This virus is becoming a growing concern obviously.

The disease is scheduled to hit the Gulf coast and Florida this spring or early summer. Its danger is mostly to pregnant women in the first trimester. People need to know that if they get a severe case (red eyes, joint pain, flu) that they need to treat the pain and fever with Tylenol, not aspirin or NSAIDs like Motrin, but I'll bet his panicking hasn't bothered to tell anyone that, either.

(111,270 posts)tentatively linked to aspirin and other NSAID use during acute illness. Ginger you might be, but Tylenol will have to do.
