Trump, Pope Francis among Nobel Peace Prize nominees

A woman who champions the rights of ISIS rape victims, Pope Francis, the Afghan women's cycling team and Donald Trump are reportedly among the candidates for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize.
The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee typically receives more than 200 nominations for the prestigious prize, and keeps candidates secret for 50 years. Panel members can make their own nominations during their first judging meeting on Feb. 29.
Norwegian lawmaker Audun Lysbakken nominated Nadia Murad, a Yazidi who escaped from Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) sexual slavery to become a spokeswoman for those abused by the group's militants.
"We want a peace prize that can awaken the world to the fight against sexual violence as a weapon of war," Lysbakken, the leader of Norway's Socialist Left Party, said in a statement.

(2,993 posts)As the article says, official nominations can only be made by a select group of people. The article implies that Trump's nomination came from this group, but people mail letters to the Nobel committee all the time nominating people. These letters mean nothing.
There was a physician who showed up on Fox "News" during the Terry Schiavo case who claimed he could cure her. One of his "qualifications" was that he'd been nominated for the "Nobel Peace Prize in Medicine." Which is like winning the Olympic decathlon gold medal in the 200m backstroke. But the "nomination" came from his congressman, so it ended up in the same circular file as the nominations for GW Bush, Dick Cheney, and the neighbor's dog the committee presumably received that year. I suspect (hope?) Trump's nomination is of this variety.

Here's a little secret about the Nobel Peace Prize. Its really easy to get nominated.
So much so, that past nominees include Benito Mussolini (1935), Adolf Hitler (1939) and Joseph Stalin (1945 and 1949). And those are just the dictators on the list.
Convicted killer and Crips gang co-founder-turned-anti-gang activist, Stanley "Tookie" Williams had not one, but five nods.
Talk show host Rush Limbaugh has also been nominated.
And so has Vladimir Putin.
It's shockingly easy to get nominated. Partly because there's no cap on the number of nominees in a given year.

(2,983 posts)Oh, not a joke. So there is some thought being given to awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to a xenophobic, racist, chicken-hawk nitwit like Donald Trump for all of his uhm... work, for, uhm... uh... what?
Oh, here we are:
""Nobel watcher Kristian Berg Harpviken, the director of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, told the French news agency AFP that he had received a copy of the nomination letter, suggesting Trump -- who drew criticism from around the world for his vow to ban Muslims entering the United States -- should be awarded the prestigious prize for "his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China".""
Yeah, I mean, can't we all see Iran, China, and Isis shaking in their collective little booties? Trump is going to, uhm, make peace through strength, by using threats, bluster - and... well, violence, if he gets elected.
By all that is good and sacred, what the fuck is wrong with people?
Can we please, please, pretty pretty please, give the Nobel Peace Prize to someone who is at least remotely interested in peace-making?

(20,136 posts)ANYONE can be nominated. It's not that hard. Anyone of the following can submit a nomination. Any member of Congress can do it; any university professor (of certain subjects) can do it -- think about how many professors there are.
According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, a nomination is considered valid if it is submitted by a person who falls within one of the following categories:
Members of national assemblies and governments of states
Members of international courts
University rectors; professors of social sciences, history, philosophy, law and theology; directors of peace research institutes and foreign policy institutes
Persons who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
Board members of organizations that have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize
Active and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (proposals by members of the Committee to be submitted no later than at the first meeting of the Committee after February 1)
Former advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Committee

(42,714 posts)Each year the Norwegian Nobel Committee a certain number of people to submit nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. As specified in the governing statutes of the Nobel Foundation, these "nominators" are drawn from the following categories:
Members of national assemblies and governments and members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
Members of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Court of Justice at the Hague
Members of Institut de Droit International
University professors of history, social sciences, philosophy, law, and theology, university presidents, and directors of peace research and international affairs institutes
Former recipients, including board members of organizations that have previously received the prize
Present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee
Former permanent advisers to the Norwegian Nobel Institute
There are over a 1000 potential nominators. The "nominees" merely are those individuals that at least one of these nominators has suggested for consideration. Those names regularly leak out to the public.
Out of this group, the Nobel Committee meets and comes up with a short list of "candidates." That list is kept secret for 50 years.
