Billy Graham's son speaks to Oregon standoff holdouts
Source: Oregonian
BURNS -- Christian evangelist Franklin Graham joined talks to end the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
...
Graham's name first came up after the last protesters called for him to act as an intermediary. Graham runs the North Carolina-based evangelical organization named after his father Billy Graham.
...
The four occupiers who remain at the refuge have said they became stuck there in the confusion that ensued after the arrests and shooting. They are David Fry, 27, of Blanchester, Ohio, Jeff Banta, 46, of Elko, Nevada, and Sean Anderson, 48, and his wife, Sandy Anderson, 47, of Riggins, Idaho.
They're insisting on immunity and say they won't leave until they receive it.

OK, this gives me a bad feeling, yet another one, that these asshats want an "honorable death" or some such bullshit.

What a shame our "journalists" are so empty, so limp, so insufficient to the challenge of doing their work professionally.

(44 posts)I have been listening to these four for several days. Their views don't even make any logical sense. They cannot be reasoned with.

(15,036 posts)They'll talk in circles to each other, neither one making any sense, until finally they decide they've "resolved" their issues and everyone leaves thinking they've each "won."
Once past the gates, a quick face-first takedown into the gravel by the appropriate lawmen and, voila (or amen, given the moment), the ordeal is over.

David Fry of Blanchester, Ohio
Jeff Banta of Elko, Nevada
Sean Anderson and Sandy Anderson of Riggins, Idaho.
You're fugitives against America.
Don't any of these people have jobs? Are they all self employed or independently wealthy?
The simple fact that they can just up and leave their homes...is amazing!

(22,813 posts)they will look like losers and fools when they finally come begging to be arrested because they have no electricity, no phone, no hope. Better yet, they may shoot each other in a fit of cabin fever and paranoia.

(508 posts)The refuge buffers a significant amount of water (significant, at least in terms of high desert country).
There is work of an ongoing nature to route that water around to various reservoirs and lakes,
especially as the spring snowmelt begins. Some of that water is delivered in support of fish &
wildlife, some it goes to ranchers, some to farmers.
None of the water management work can be done until the threat posed by the 4 occupiers is gone.
The ironic thing is that their presence on the refuge will, at some point, begin to injure the farmers
and ranchers they claim to support.

Franklin Graham is totally disrespected on DU, and deservedly so, but this crowd is different. His involvement might provide a face-saving way for them to surrender. If the Refuge is returned to FWS with no more deaths, I'll call that a win, even if it means that Graham gets some of the credit.

(1,397 posts)Back in his 20's, Franklin Graham was fed up with his father and Jesus, so, he took up a life of women, booze, and coke (NOT Coca-Cola). Then, PRAISETHELORD!!!, from the depths of his depravity, Franklin was "saved by the blood of Jesus Christ!!!"
Actually, what happened, was -- Franklin realized if he cleaned himself up, he would inherit the leadership of his father's multi-million dollar scam, Billy Graham Evangelism.
Here's a personal story. My parents lived in a major Tennessee city. If the Presbyterian church canonized saints, my mother would have been one -- never said a negative word about another person; gave her money, time, and efforts to charities of all kinds; worked day and night for other people; lived by the guidance laid down in the Sermon on the Mount.
She was very active in an organization that sponsored guest preachers coming to her hometown.
About the time she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (she lived another six months), Franklin Graham and the Graham Traveling Snake Oil Show were invited to her hometown for a week-long "Crusade for Christ." The Graham organization had some demands:
-- Locals had to raise $250,000 -- that's right: ONE-FOURTH OF A MILLION DOLLARS or they won't come
-- On top of that, the Graham's and their entourage must have: top-of-the-line hotel suites; 24/7 limo service; service of their private airplane; very specific foods, bottled water, audio-visual support; and similar rock-star treatment -- ALL AT THE EXPENSE OF THE LOCAL ORGANIZATION.
Normally my mother would have been a lead donor, kicking in $10,000 or so. She was so upset at the financial and support demands, she stepped down from the board of the sponsoring organization and refused to have anything to do with preparations for the Graham circus. In the last month she was alive -- in hospice care -- I fielded a half-a-dozen phone calls a day from Graham reps trying to get her support (that is, trying to get her money) -- the calls ended when I told Franklin's personal secretary where Franklin, Billy, and Franklin's sister Ann Graham Lotz could shove their Bibles.

(16,343 posts)wish things like this would get more exposure....grifters, frauds and snake oil salesmen are all these guys are...
Always surprised so few know about that part of Franklin's early (and secretly current?) life with the booze, women and drugs.
I guess having the Jebus and to run your life doesn't really work. Or was Billy just a shitty absentee parent? If Franklin had more of a dusky hue he'd be in jail.

In the following newspaper articles from 27 June 1954, Churchill is quoted as saying to jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war: Churchill urges Patience in Coping with Red Dangers by W. H. Lawrence, New York Times, p. 1 and Vigilance and Time Asked by Churchill by Walter Trohan, Chicago Daily Tribune, p. 1. M.D., via email.
From my Definitive Wit of Winston Churchill, page 37:
Meeting jaw to jaw is better than war.
1954 Commonly misquoted as Jaw, jaw is better than war, war, an expression coined four years later by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, on a visit to Australia.
I verified this from Sir Martin Gilbert who refers his official biography, Volume 8, Never Despair, London: Heinemann, 1988:page 1004: Churchill then told the American legislators that conferences of this kind were vitally important, that meeting jaw to jaw is better than war.*
