Other US mayors join call to get the lead out of Flint right now after Michigan
governor said replacing pipes amid water crisis was not on short-term agenda
Joined by other former and current mayors, the mayor of Flint, Michigan, called for immediate action to remove corroded lead pipes from the citys contaminated water distribution system on Tuesday.
We are here to take a stand to get the lead out of Flint right now, said Mayor Karen Weaver of the citys water crisis, which has exposed an untold number of children and adults to high levels of lead. We want to make sure we identify every place that is high risk. This is where we want to start.
Republican Michigan governor Rick Synder said this week that removing the corroded lead pipes isnt on his short-term agenda.
Its a lot of work to take out pipes, to redo all of the infrastructure, thats a whole planning process, the governor said at a press conference.

(10,336 posts)even acknowledge it, let alone deal with it. A capitalist disaster of epic proportions. On edit:
PS: The State of Michigan is the responsible party, and owes these residents a lifetime of proper medical care, counseling, treatment, etc as it relates to the lead. They need to be in a singular category, as victims of the State.

(3,919 posts)and he will do nothing to replace the pipes. nothing - per michigan senator on rachel a bit ago.
i commend the mayor for standing up and demanding they be replaced and not waiting for snyder's "permission" nor his return phone call.

(581 posts)Republican control. Snyder will STEAL the $100 million from Obama and let the people get sick and die. He nor will EM Earley ever be charged. The Republicans will hold a Congressional hearing in DC Wednesday, NOT ONE Republican responsible for the water crisis will be there for the meeting. NOT ONE. It was mentioned on TV this evening that the national Republicans are in for protection of Gov. Snyder and his administration and will focus the blame on Obama. They have done that in the past.
I hope the people of this nation finally wake up to the Republicans criminal act. Many of them can be google that has happened the past few years. None of those responsible were ever charged. They are still in control.

(581 posts)the Flint, MI water crisis, where actually 10 people died, yet they were not mentioned in the hearing. He continue to not request that Gov. Snyder come before the committee. WHY? The hearing was a dirext assault on the EPA, which Republicans would love to close down. They took much of the blame instead of the Republican officials in MICH. WHY?
Jason Chaffetz has held or been at dozens of hearing on Benghazi, where 4 people died, and has made that a continual trashing of Clinton, yet he is giving the Gov. of MICH. Snyder a free pass. WHY? Chaffetz said not to make it a political issue but he does in all his committee hearings.
The citizens of Flint are paying water bills monthly of over $100. yet cannot use the water. The reason given is to keep the water department in business. Gov. Snyder now is saying he will cover 50% of those water bills with a new bill asking for 32 million from his party.
