Evangelical leader unleashes righteous fury on Donald Trump — the ‘golden calf’ candidate
Source: Raw Story
A top evangelical leader rebuked Donald Trump as the Republican frontrunner wooed conservative Christians with a speech Monday at Liberty University.
Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, posted a series of withering tweets as Trump spoke to what he described as a record crowd at a mandatory convocation at the Virginia university founded by Jerry Falwell.

Evangelicals can love a golden calf, as long as Aaron promises to make Mexico pay for it.['blockquote]

(10,345 posts)People who support Trump are isolationist xenophobes with no compassion for their fellow man. Simple as that.

...but this doesn't actually make any sense.

(3,051 posts)I understood it to mean that Trump is a false god (such as the calf Aaron brought) and then a play on the promise by Trump to not only build a border wall, but make Mexico pay for it with tariffs.
The story is close to me, in that I am (not by name, but by descent) a descendant of Aaron, at least according to family lore and recent genetic testing that tells all Cohenim we at least have a common Semitic male ancestor 3500 years ago. I always read that story and feel like a complete putz.
Is there a Christian concept with which I am not familiar?

(942 posts)the Biblical account is that Moses was away a long time getting the 10 Commandments, and the people thought he wasn't coming back and got scared.
So the people decided that they needed a new god to worship. They gave Aaron all their gold etc. and he created the golden calf.
(Idolatry in the Bible=bad, as you know).
So Trump as Aaron getting Mexico to pay for the wall (gold calf) doesn't make much sense unless people are going to start worshipping the wall... ?
Another thought, maybe Moore is an opera fan? A comparison to the libretto in Gounod's Faust would make more sense. However, in the opera, the golden calf was created by Mephistopheles, not Aaron.

(34,195 posts)Clips of him today on cable news showed him saying he was going to read from Two Corinthians while Christians refer to it as Second Corinthians.
He also said I have support from the evangelicals, while a Christian would say I have support from evangelicals".
KingCharlemagne
(7,908 posts)may be), but his grammar and usage in both instances are acceptable in spoken English. To wit, it is OK to say "Two Corinthians" or "Second Corinthians." Likewise, "the evangelicals" is acceptable, as is "evangelicals."
Trump is guilty of many linguistic faux pas, but neither of these fit the bill.
Pedantic itch scratched. Now back to regular programming.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump appeared to mistake a Biblical citation during remarks at evangelical Liberty University today.
The book in the New Testament is commonly referred to as Second Corinthians, not Two Corinthians. The mis-reference quickly drew rebukes on Twitter.

Two Corinthians, right? he asked students, many of whom began chuckling almost immediately.

"Two Corinthians, 3:17, thats the whole ballgame, Trump said, drawing laughter from the crowd of students at Liberty University who knew Trump was attempting to refer to Second Corinthians.

(13,508 posts)... speaking English English
(Now whether that's a plus or a minus for Trump is undecided but the phrase
itself isn't something to bother about.)

(7,908 posts)point about spoken English.

(35,701 posts)It is the Liberty U theme verse. And his awkward way of saying it just makes him look more like a wannabe right wing Christian. Pathetic failed pander attempt. If you are going to pander you better actually learn the local dialect. And if you are going to pander to Bible thumpers, you better actually know something about the Bible - otherwise you just are exposed for the tool you are.

(34,195 posts)That explains why all the news shows this morning pointed out how Trump screwed up calling it "Two Corinthians".
And why the audience at Liberty U. laughed at him.
