Hillary Clinton accused Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder of not caring about Flint's water crisis during Sunday's Democratic debate.
A Michigan city plagued by a poisoned water supply found another ally at Sundays Democratic presidential debate.
Hillary Clinton criticized Gov. Rick Snyders response to the dangerously high level of lead contaminating Flints water as lacking concern for a city whose population is mostly black and low-income.
The governor of that state acted as though he didnt really care, said Clinton, bringing up Flint in her final statement of the NBC News debate in Charleston, S.C.
If the kids in a rich suburb of Detroit had been drinking contaminated water and being bathed in it, there wouldve been action, the former secretary of state added................................

Sunday night's fourth Democratic presidential debate on NBC ended up being, well, pretty much what everyone predicted: a contentious, combative affair between frontrunner Hillary Clinton, contender Bernie Sanders, and forgettable Martin O'Malley. But at the very end of the night, when moderator Lester Holt offered the candidates a chance to address anything they thought had been overlooked, Clinton turned away from attacking her Democratic rivals, and in doing so had perhaps her best debate moment of her 2016 presidential campaign. The unexpected issue Hillary Clinton brought up at the debate? The Flint, Michigan water crisis, which has imperiled the health of thousands of people, drawn a federal emergency declaration from President Obama, and shaken the administration of Gov. Rick Snyder.
.............................
But if you're taking everything into account ― the words, the delivery, the unapologetic moral certitude, and the power to get things done ― this may just have been the strongest moment Clinton's had in any of the debates so far. She was given the choice of what she wanted to say, how she wanted to close, and what she settled on was maybe the most powerful demonstration of her skills as an orator that the race has seen has so far. It's not really enough just to read the words, so go ahead and give the video of her statement a look.
That, right there, is Hillary Clinton at the peak of her political powers and shows just how much she can crush an issue as perfectly positioned as this one. When a governor (from the opposing party, no less) is being roasted on mainstream media and social media alike for failing to protect their state from lead poisoning, suffice to say things are lined up for a forceful, dramatic statement.
But for all the Clinton supporters out there who've been sweating a little in the face of Sanders' impressive ascent in the polls, this moment will probably set them at ease ― it was the embattled frontrunner in her best fighting form, and she showed off a rhetorical flourish that was unique and distinct from Sanders' approach. Obviously, he has his own inimitable style that gets the better of her sometimes, especially on economic justice and foreign policy. But in addition to being a hugely significant public wake-up call to the nation about the situation in Flint, Clinton saved the best for last, in the final Democratic debate before the Iowa caucuses.

(14,040 posts)Here's the thing... it's a good thing that Hillary Clinton took the time during this NATIONAL debate, to highlight the systematic failure to care for certain residents of Michigan. It's a good thing when ANY Democrat makes the news asking for positive change and placing the blame where it belongs... which in this situation is Rick Snyder... not Hillary Clinton or the NY Daily News. Neither caused the problem in Flint but both are trying to make it a National issue instead of a local one.
We are still on Democratic Underground and that means we support all Democrats.

(4,259 posts)And he spoke to the Flint issue and Gov Snyder some time before Clinton told Snyder to 'cut it out'.
Where are the kudos to Sanders? Clinton was too little, too late. She doesn't get to be the trail blazer here. Except in the minds of headline writers.

(4,259 posts)Clinton came late to the Flint water problem.
Sanders called for Snyder's resignation some time before Clinton pouted her outrage.. Is that your point?

(19,460 posts)Any arm chair quarterback can call for a resignation, it takes action to get something done which is what Hillary did.

(4,259 posts)Like I said. Too little, too late. What other of Sanders positions will Clinton creep up on in the coming days and weeks?

(4,259 posts)Can't have it both ways. Hillary is usually right on top of things. One could almost say she has an inside line! Crazy, huh?
Just can't say so this time. She picked up from him. Simple.

(30,777 posts)water situation, made statements, and sent campaign staff to Flint to get the facts. She is far out in front on this issue.
All Sanders has done is some angry yelling about a resignation.

(4,259 posts)and with Clinton. (She's sending staff out? For what? She's nobody at the moment...just a woman with big ambitions)
Let her analyze it to death. Maybe form a steering committee.
"No we can't'. "But we can talk about it"

(30,777 posts)She is letting people know what she will do about such situations when she is President. She is showing her care for people. She is taking action.
Michael Moore noticed. He did not say anything about Bernie's angry shouting over the situation. Bernie does nothing but shout. We don't need a President who shouts angrily, points his finger and waves his arms around. If by some miracle he was elected, that would be ALL he got done. No one would work with him.

(30,058 posts)The actions of Snyder is deplorable, his statement he would allow his grandchildren to drink the water says a lot, he would climb a tree to tell a lie rather than stay on the ground and tell the truth.

(581 posts)Fox News, the honest and fair cable TV channel has been silent on the water/lead crisis in Flint, MI. It would seem like their viewers would like to hear all of the news. But Fox never reports on any state that has a pollution issue, guess it because they are mostly Republicans controlled states. When there was a lead scarce in DC last week, the 8 people were put in the hospital, it was a huge concern, but in Flint, MI, nothing has been done for those drinking the lead laden water. I wonder what the difference is between Flint, MI and DC. Gov. Snyder really downplayed the crisis until a storm brewed.
