Tremor detected near North Korea nuclear site (probable nuke test)

Source: BBC

A 5.1 magnitude earthquake has been detected in northern North Korea, close to a site previously used for nuclear tests.

Chinese and South Korea officials said there were indications the tremor was man-made, which could mean the North has carried out a nuclear explosion.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said ministers were holding an emergency meeting.

But, their boosters are likely to continue to break up during staging as they poke up over the horizon above the South China Sea.

North Korea will make what it calls a “major announcement” at 3.30am GMT (2.30pm AEDT/10.30pm ET) following reports of an earthquake – believed to be artificial – close to what is known to be a nuclear testing site.

If it was felt in South Korea at all it would have been only a tiny amount of movement.

It will be interesting to see what the North Koreans say. If it was a nuclear test, this would be their 4th since I came to Korea 12 years ago.

New Navy Leader: Nukes 'Foundational To Our Survival'

New Navy Leader: Nukes 'Foundational To Our Survival'

By Robert Burns, The Associated Press 3:01 p.m. EST January 5, 2016

WASHINGTON — In his blueprint for a stronger Navy, the sea service's new top boss, Adm. John M. Richardson, is blunt about what he thinks matters most: nuclear punch.

Battling terrorists is today's problem, but in looking toward a farther horizon, Richardson wants a Navy built to counter unpredictable future threats from other countries. No. 1 on his list is a new fleet of nuclear-armed submarines, known as "boomers," that prowl the oceans as the quiet centerpiece of the nation's nuclear force. The Navy plans to replace the current fleet of 14 Ohio-class boomers, which began service as early as 1981, with 12 next-generation subs.
