Blast near India mission in Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif

Explosions and gunfire have been heard near the Indian consulate in northern Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

It was not immediately clear whether the consulate had been directly targeted. The area is also home to a building belonging to a local politician.

Indian diplomatic missions have come under attack from militants in the past in Afghanistan.

In 2008 and 2009, the embassy in Kabul was attacked twice, with dozens killed.
