Wayne Rogers, Trapper John on 'M.A.S.H.,' dies at 82

LOS ANGELES (AP) Wayne Rogers, whose Trapper John McIntyre on "M.A.S.H." was among the most beloved characters on one of the most popular shows of all time, died Thursday.
The actor was surrounded by family when he died in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia at age 82, his publicist and longtime friend Rona Menashe told The Associated Press.
As army surgeon Trapper John on "M.A.S.H.," Rogers swapped wisecracks with partner in martinis and mischief Hawkeye Pierce, played by Alan Alda.
The two doctors blew off steam between surgeries pulling pranks, romancing nurses and tormenting their tent-mate Frank Burns, always with an endless supply of booze and one-liners.

(1,290 posts)Saw him on Fox news many times. He was not a person that the middle class should look up to. He was a pure talking head for the 1%.

(2,672 posts)He was just an actor, FFS. Regardless if he was a great or poor actor.
He didn't care if people lost their well paying union jobs and went hungry. He didn't care if a sick child didn't have health care and lacked medicine. He was definitely a right wing hack and he didn't care for the common people that were struggling with life.
Yet, I should honor him? Fuck no I will not honor a person that thought people like me were peons.
Yes, I'm sorry that he died as I don't wish death on anyone, but that's about it.

(14,277 posts)This guy is an ableist fool who thinks Obama is a fascist. And a union-basher.
Wonder how he accepted the role as Morris Dees (the SPLC co-founder) in Ghosts of Mississippi?

(4,691 posts)Thanks for the enjoyment your acting brought me in shows like "Stagecoach West", "M*A*S*H", and "City of Angels" to name a few. I didn't agree with you politically, but what the hell.

Not the Trapper!!
Well, hell, this calls for a martini toast. Now where did I put the tent still?

(129,197 posts)One last hit in the gut on the way out of 2015. What a shame. His unique character on M*A*S*H made it hard for a "replacement" to distinguish himself, although Mike Farrell made B.J. Hunnicutt less wacky but still just as much a trickster.
Condolences to his family and R.I.P.

(129,197 posts)both having similar temperaments... generally low-keyed, quick-witted, compassionate, but occasionally passionate enough when needed to make some dramatic point. Trapper was just wacky. lol
Even with the earlier episodes' treatment of Houlihan, I think Loretta Swit did a good job making her acerbic enough to counter the locker room atmosphere...and the character's higher rank added the balance to thwart some of the more egregious stuff (she essentially became the bossy "Lucy" of Peanuts' fame and had some modicum of power to underscore it ). Although I think the efforts to "soften" her by having her in a relationship with Frank, was sortof bizarre but perhaps to give them something to do other than being 1-dimensional regulation nuts.

(8,584 posts)And that's saying something for me. I loved the movie, and the teevee show. The movie was a one-off commentary on the Vietnam war, but the teevee show was a running commentary on life in general and war in particular. He was an excellent comedic actor. RIP.
