(Reuters) - One person was fatally wounded in a shooting at a Detroit-area mall on Saturday and a suspect had been taken into custody, police said.
Police responded to the Eastland Center in the city of Harper Woods around 5:50 p.m. local time (2250 GMT) and found a victim who had been shot multiple times on the sidewalk outside a Burlington Coat Factory, Harper Woods Department of Public Safety director Jim Burke said in a statement.
Burke said the victim was transported to a local hospital where he died. One suspect was taken into custody, Burke said, and an investigation was ongoing.
The Detroit Free Press newspaper reported that the mall, about 14 miles (22.5 km) northeast of downtown Detroit, was evacuated and locked down in response to the shooting.

(5,169 posts)I am not sure if the victim was a saint or a sinner. I suspect the latter, but it does not matter. It is a sad thing caused by firearms.

(2,493 posts)And simply absolves the criminal of his actions. This was a murder caused by a criminal. The firearm was simply the tool the criminal utilized. The victim would be dead whether stabbed, shot or killed by some other means. The common denominator is the criminal.

(16,038 posts)This person was killed by someone who planned to kill him or someone...it has fuckall to do with a gun.."caused by guns" is truly the dumbest speculation of cause one could dream up about this and most murders....nothing could be further from the truth...it was "caused" by a murderer wanting to murder and nothing else.

How irrational to maintain that the one common denominator is never a factor.

(16,038 posts)There is "one common denominator"...are all murders committed with guns?..No, murdering murders have/will always find a tool to carry out their desired results....if there were one common denominator, it would be a desire to kill someone else.
"Cause" has a meaning. Start there.

(40,416 posts)I know it well, although I grew up on the west side of Detroit. We shopped at Northland, the first big shopping mall in the area, located just north of Eight Mile Road on the west side, in Southfield, MI.
In my childhood I would go to downtown Detroit with my parents, sometimes by way of the Livernois trolley, and shop at J. L. Hudson's. But that was before shopping malls. We would also go to Crowley's and Kern's, all in downtown Detroit. It was a big affair.
The elevators at downtown Hudson's were fucking scary, all manually operated by sadistic women. One did not want to descend the entire 22 floors at once. I would rather land in an Apollo capsule. At least that's how I remember them.

It was a sad day when J. L. Hudson's was demolished.

"It was not a random act," said Deputy Chief Ted Stager. "We do not believe it was a robbery. It was an intended shooting. At this time we do not know the motive."
Stager said the man has not been identified yet, but he's believed to be in his late teens or early 20s. He was shot several times as he walked out the doors on the south side of the mall at 5:52 p.m. He died of his wounds a short time later at a hospital.
Police are questioning one person in connection with the shooting, but Stager said it's unclear if that person was the shooter. About 8 p.m., investigators continued using flashlights to search the ground for evidence in the parking lot.

HARPER WOODS (WJBK) - Three teenagers are accused of opening fire and killing a 17-year-old as he was leaving Eastland Mall the day after Christmas. Now that murder charges have been filed, police say this was not a random shooting.
Three Detroit teens, Brendon Stanton-Lipscomb, 18, and Tyshon Taylor, 17, and Demetrius Armour, 17, were charged on Friday arraigned on charges of first degree murder, and 2 counts of assault with intent to murder.
The three teens were charged for the murder of 18-year-old Tyrell Lane of Eastpointe last week. Harper woods police say the three targeted Lane at Eastland Mall outside Burlington Coat Factory. According to police, Taylor and Armour assaulted two other teens as Stanton-Lipscomb pulled out a gun and began shooting.

"We had the shooter identified probably within A few hours of the crime," Stager said "They're on Facebook, social media. bragging and showing off their level of violence."
