Off-duty officer fatally shoots armed man in Northlake Mall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say one person has been fatally shot following an altercation inside Northlake Mall.

Just after 2 on Christmas Eve, reports began surfacing of a shooting inside of Northlake Mall. CMPD says preliminary information on the scene indicates there was an argument between two groups of people inside the mall. Officers, who were working off-duty at mall, responded, and an armed subject was shot by an officer during the altercation. The deceased, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced deceased on the scene by MEDIC.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Authorities say those looking to reunite with loved ones at the mall are meeting at the AMC movie theater at Northlake Mall.

What a bleak picture.

You'd think the police, and civilians might start putting the brakes on their impulses to murder people, knowing some of their victims do go ahead and die, without being paralyzed a long time first. Apparently they feel it's OK to leave the discretion to the other guys.

The loved ones can get a full refund for the deceased's gifts after the funeral.

Where it was stated that the "deceased" was the one shooting off his gun in the middle of a crowded mall.

I am not one to extol the virtues of cops, but this one happened to do the right thing. Perhaps he prevented an innocent bystander from getting shot.

Somehow I'm all out of sympathy for the life of someone who sees fit to bring a gun with them for a day of shopping at the mall. Another proud "good guy" with a gun I'm sure he was. No loss.

Apparently, he got into an argument with another man at a shoe store, pulled a gun and started shooting.

Daquan Westbrook has been identified as the man killed in an officer-involved shooting at Northlake Mall in Charlotte, N.C., on Christmas Eve, the New York Daily News reported.

Mr. Westbrook, 18, was a rapper who performed as “Donkey Cartel” and has released a mixtape titled “Convicted Felon With a Weapon,” the cover of which shows him in a prison cell wearing an orange jump suit.

According to the Daily News, one of his songs was called “Can’t Be Touched.”

“Westbrook’s friend at the scene told reporters he was going to be a new father. He had just graduated high school in 2014, according to his Twitter,” the Daily News wrote.

Who knows why, but he won't even get to see his kid's first birthday, it seems. Shoulda dropped felon with a gun for father with a son.

I hope he had a good reason for helping all the folks tonight who get to sleep with something other than sugar plums to dream about. Probably just being selfish, however. There are usually other ways, but we can't know now.
