A Senegalese refugee who made the perilous journey to Europe on an overcrowded migrant boat has won 400,000 on the Spanish Christmas lottery.
Identified only by his first name, Ngagne, the 35-year-old was one of thousands of people to take part in Spains famous El Gordo - the fat one - game.
When his hometown of Roquetas de Mar won first prize in Tuesdays draw, everybody whod bought a ticket in the coastal resort was automatically entitled to a share of a massive 630 million jackpot.
Speaking after learning of his win, Ngagne paid tribute to the Spanish rescue workers who changed his life when they intervened to save the desperate mainly African refugees who were on his boat.

(3,384 posts)WHY THE HELL are poor people in the USA or anyone, esp. a refugee, receiving any gov't benefits spending that money on LOTTERY TICKETS??
That is insane. How about at least buying some goods to re-circulate those dollars?
I'm a Lefty, but I agree with the "right" on this issue.
"""Speaking after learning of his win, Ngagne paid tribute to the Spanish rescue workers who changed his life when they intervened to save the desperate mainly African refugees who were on his boat. """ Paid? How is that? With fresh CASH???
I DOUBT IT.
"""everybody whod bought a ticket in the coastal resort was automatically entitled to a share of a massive 630 million jackpot. """ What about EVERYONE SHARING??
That is fucked up.

(160,593 posts)We don't really need to ask ourselves how the right "thinks" on matters like this. We all knew long ago when we also knew by instinct and by character we could never be right-wingers.
Too much real stuff is at stake to view our lives as a spiteful game.
This man sacrificed his own life already to try to find a way to support himself and his loved ones who are in desperate trouble. That's why these people, including all those who die trying to make it, do something more courageous than anything most people could ever do in a lifetime when they leave it all behind, and crowd themselves onto those boats which sink continually, taking thousands to their graves, just in hopes of finding a job in a country where they are already violently hated by the pig-faced greed bag righties who live there.

He sounds like a common poor Red State Republican just hoping that one day HE'LL BE RICH! !! YEAH!
That you guys want to honor him for gambling with his 5 Euros tells us all that you and Brooklynite are among the very fortunate.. ( financially, anyway)

Your "Holier-than -thou" clearly states YOUR overly self-important value, doesn't it?
But it must have felt like the best thing ever, for you..

(160,593 posts)El Gordo: Senegal man wins 400,000 in Spain lottery
23 December 2015
A migrant from Senegal who travelled to Europe by boat has won a stake of some 400,000 (£294,000; $436,000) in Spain's Christmas lottery.
The man, named Ngagne, travelled from Morocco to Spain in 2007.
Ticket-holders in his coastal town of Roquetas de Mar won first prize, and a share of 640m (£470m), in the "El Gordo" (The Fat One) lottery.
Ngagne told one Spanish newspaper that he and his wife often did not have even 5 to last the day.
. . .
Unlike many other lotteries, there is no single jackpot in El Gordo. Instead the winnings are distributed among thousands of people.

African migrant saved from sinking boat wins big in Spanish lottery

A 35-year Senegalese man who was saved by the Spanish coastguard after making a perilous journey from Africa is celebrating his win of 400,000 in the Christmas lottery.
Eight years ago he arrived in Spain with nothing. But on Tuesday, Ngagne cried with joy as he realized all his dreams had come true with the purchase of lottery ticket.
He was one of thousands who bought a ticket with the number 79140 from a lottery shop in the Andalusian seaside town of Roquetas de Mar.
The number won the top prize of El Gordo the 'fat one' in Tuesdays draw, netting the town of 90,000 people a change in fortune.
. . .
"Nearly everyone here has a ticket or a share in one," the towns mayor, Almudena Morales, told the news agency Europa Press. "People are going crazy, nobody can believe it. The money went to down-to-earth people who work hard and who really needed it."
