TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - The death of a black woman who was forcibly removed by a police officer from a Florida hospital where she had sought treatment is under investigation by state and local authorities, the chief of police in Blountstown, Florida, said on Wednesday.

Barbara Dawson, 57, had refused to leave Calhoun Liberty Hospital early on Monday after she was discharged by her physician from its emergency department, police said. Blountstown is about 50 miles (80 km) west of Tallahassee.

A preliminary autopsy report showed Dawson died from a blood clot in her lungs that was due to morbid obesity, Police Chief Mark Mallory said in a statement.

The Tallahassee Democrat newspaper reported that relatives said Dawson felt she needed more medical care. Reuters could not immediately reach officials at Calhoun Liberty Hospital or Dawson's family attorneys for comment.

Had a friend way back when who was refused treatment because he had no insurance. Money may be the reason they did not give her more care.

By The Associated Press Wed, Dec 23, 2015 @ 7:32 pm

TALLAHASSEE | Police say a Florida woman who collapsed after police arrested her for refusing to leave a Florida hospital when doctors discharged her died from a blood clot in her lung.

Blountstown Police Chief Mark Mallory said in a statement Wednesday that the medical examiner’s office in Panama City found that 57-year-old Barbara Dawson died from blood clots due to being excessively overweight.

The autopsy report, police report and dashcam footage of the incident have not been released.

Police say Dawson collapsed Monday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went for treatment for breathing difficulties. She was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing when she refused to leave.
