Armed Forces Members,Veterans Use #iwillprotectyou After Muslim Child Says She's Afraid

On Facebook and Twitter, military service members and veterans have started using the hashtag #iwillprotectyou after one mother's post went viral about her daughter's fear of being kicked out of the country.

Melissa Chance Yassini posted about her daughter's reaction to hearing proposals by Donald Trump to ban Muslims from entering the country...

Yassini's post went viral and was shared more than 20,000 times. Eventually she and her daughter told their story to The Associated Press.
Kerri Peek, an Army veteran saw the story on social media and was horrified.

"I was up all night, it bothered me," Peek told ABC News. "I'm a mom, for mother to mother ... I know you want to protect your children from everything."

There is a reason the first paragraph is first. A member of the military's duty is to the constitution and the safety and protection of her citizens.
It is constructed to avoid the pitfalls of facism. Some, even in the military, don't understand that.

7. I don't know if they teach incoming recruits about lawful orders anymore.

When I went through Basic Training in 1986, we had an entire afternoon of classes and lectures on what constituted a lawful or an unlawful order. We were told in no uncertain terms that if we were given an unlawful order (such as to mistreat, harm, or kill a prisoner of war) we should disobey such an order, no matter who it came from. I don't know if the guys who served in Iraq got that particular lecture (based on the mistreatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, I'm guessing not), but it seems that behaving with honor as a service member no longer takes precendent in our military.

I'm glad to see these guys step up and remind the haters that our military's job is to defend the defenseless, and protect the innocent.

If the President himself gives an unlawful order, such as to round up, detain, and deport American citizens, or alien non-combatants without trial, every service member is bound by law and by honor to disobey such an order.

The thing that's scaring me about Donald Trump: I would consider a fascist dictator like Donald Trump wants to be a domestic enemy. Since all enlisted persons take an oath to defend the nation against "all enemies foreign and domestic," what happens when your commander-in-chief outs himself as a domestic enemy?

On my way into Iraq we had briefing after briefing and videos showing American planes and tanks and artillery blowing shit up all over Iraq and Afghanistan. Hoo-fucking-rah!!! But not one word about disobeying an illegal or even harmful order. And I was with a group of reservists and guard soldiers heading for Abu Ghraib after the torture and murder and rape sessions sanctioned by Cheney and Gen. Miller. Que WTF over???? The pictures were tame compared to what actually took place.

We have been killing the Iraqi people since 1991. Other than all our oil under their sand, can anybody tell me why? What did those people ever do to us? WE the good ol' USA dismantled and destroyed an entire country. What a mess and the repukes running for office only want more war.

Bless the soldiers who stand up for this young Muslim girl. I know that while in Iraq, such acts (and there were some) were few and far between. As our beloved brass often chimed - Fuck 'em, they're just Iraqis!!!!

I distinctly remember the phrasing was 'obey the lawful orders.' The phrase 'according to...' seems to fulfill the same function, but it is not quite as strongly worded.

Soldiers have the right and duty to not follow terrible orders like that. It has precedence in law and international law.

I think the answer lies in the president being bound by the same oath of allegiance to the Constitution as everyone else who swears it. I am of the belief that the president's authority does not extend to violating his oath of office or in issuing unlawful orders under the UCMJ or in contravention of the Nuremberg Accords. Had we held previous presidents to their oaths of office and required their enforcement of international accords on the conduct of war, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today.

I can see how this is a good, valid and honourable action by the veterans of
Vietnam, Cold War duty, Bosnia et al but it is pure two-faced American exceptionalism
when the people saying it have been - or are still - in active service in Afghanistan,
Kuwait, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Pakistan, ...



It's terrible that the poor girl was/is so terrified of the threat of Trump & his brownshirts
but the response of the rest of the world at the thought of the US military "protecting"
anyone but themselves & their paymasters is black humour indeed.
