Icelandic banker sentenced to five years in prison

Source: Iceland Monitor

Former head of Glitnir bank, Lárus Welding, has been sentenced to five years in prison for breach of trust in the so-called Stim case.

The verdict was announced at the Reykjavik District Court this morning. Head of Capital Markets at Glitnir, Jóhannes Baldursson, was sentenced to 2 years in prison in the same case, also for breach of trust, and former director of the Saga Capital bank, Þorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson was sentenced to 18 months in prison for being party to the breach of trust.

Welding was accused of breach of trust by overstepping authorisation for loans at Glitnir bank when ensured Stim could get a loan of ISK 20 billion with all holdings in the company as security, as well as share in FL Group, which the borrowed sum was used to purchase. The borrowed money was also used to buy Glitnir shares.

Welding had previously been acquitted in two other cases, known as the Vafning case and the Aurum case. The High Court overturned the decision of the Reykjavik District Court in the latter case which will go to retrial next year.

It does need to happen here.

Let's not forget politicians also. I think that we should have audits of politicians. Let's say every 4 years 5 get randomly selected and audited. If there is anything there that could warrant a criminal charge then we charge them, put them on trial and then hand out the appropriate punishment.

There is really no difference between our current politicians and bankers. One feeds the other.

Edit to add:

I am a firm believer that politicians are there to serve "we the people" vs their own interests, big bank interests and big corp interests. We've not been represented properly in years. "We the people" should be the focus.
