12-year-old Sikh boy arrested in US after classmate accuses him of carrying a bomb
Source: business standard
Armaan Singh Sarai, a 12-year-old boy from an American-Sikh family, was arrested by the Dallas police on December 11 and held for three consecutive days after he was accused by a bully in his class of carrying a bomb to school, claims his cousin in a Facebook post.
Ginee Haer, who claims to be Armaans cousin, took to Facebook to describe the boy's ordeal. Describing Armaan as a goofball, Haer tells us how her cousin was born and raised in Texas and recently moved to Dallas with his family. The post goes on to describe Armaans congenital heart condition, which has led him to having three open heart surgeries. This she said had already made settling in a new location difficult.
According to Haer, Armaan was arrested by the police on December 11 on the basis of an accusation by one of his school-mates. Haer writes: A bully in class thought it would be funny to accuse him of having a bomb, and so the principal, without any questioning, interrogation, or notification to his parents, called the police.
Haer goes on to describe how Armaans family contacted every police department in the area in a bid to locate him, only to find out that he had been sent to a juvenile facility.

(6,241 posts)bully in juvie. He pretty much filed a false report. He is 100% responsible for everything that happened that day, and the arrest of the innocent boy. It's not different from that SWATTING thing that's been happening online a lot. Dangerous and stupid.

(6,241 posts)that there was a gun in his backpack, would you want the principal to investigate himself, and risk his life and the lives of any students that were in the area, or would you want him to let the police handle it?
I mean, any answer is going to be wrong, depending on the outcome. If there is a gun, and the police aren't called, the principal is "reckless, wanted to be a hero", ect. If there's no gun, and the police are called, the principal is "racist, jumping at shadows," ect.
I think calling the police was the right move. Holding the Sikh child for 3 days was absolutely wrong. Question him, talk to his parents just to make sure everyone is safe, then expel/arrest the bully for giving a false report.

That was stupid...
Then
Carrying the child off with no attempt to contact the parents or centralize information of where the young man was.

(6,241 posts)That should have been the second call the principal made. He screwed up there. When my son pushed a bully down, the principal called me 10 minutes after getting the situation calmed down.
As for not checking the bag, well, if I though there was a bomb in a bag, I know I wouldn't touch it.

(90,339 posts)... never admitted to there being a bomb in the bad to the police which wouldn't be actionable seeing they didn't have his parents present.

Now, Armaan must wear an ankle monitor while he is under house arrest awaiting a court date.
Serious stuff
Armaan said police interviewed him briefly Friday without his parents present and then evacuated a classroom to examine his backpack.
He was handcuffed and taken to the detention facility in a squad car.

(54,381 posts)The bully needs to go away for a year at least in juvenile detention, the principal of the school needs to be fired, and the cops need to be sued and suspended.
And that's for starters. There has to be severe penalties for the perpetrators of this kind of incident. This is not 1938, Texas is not Nazi Germany, and we are not all Jews, Gypsies and gays. We have remedies for this. We need to implement them before we can't.

(101,318 posts)His brother does seem to be saying that sending him to the principal would have been a reasonable reaction. It's believable both that someone, perhaps within earshot, took it as a real threat; or that one or more of the other kids consciously exaggerated it to get him into trouble, when it could have gone unremarked. 3 days seems a long time to keep him unless you knew you were likely to charge him.

(1,134 posts)I understand an initial concern that would cause it to be investigated, and even for the police to be called. What I don't understand is why it went as far as it did, even after it was determined that there was no bomb. Give the kid some sort of normal school punishment like detention, suspension, or whatever.
