Freddie Gray case: Hung jury in William Porter trial

Source: CNN

The judge has declared a mistrial in the case of Baltimore police Officer William Porter after jurors said they were deadlocked and unable to reach a unanimous verdict on any of the four charges against him. Porter was one of six officers charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray. Prosecutors will decide whether to re-try the case.

So did the jury have to be unanimous? 8 black & 5 white is a pretty good demo. 7962 Dec 2015 #9

"beyond a reasonable doubt" has caused a lot of mistrials and hung juries. I think they will re-try it. Both sides want a precedent for the next 5 trials.

Porter said they didn't belt them in because the quarters were too tight and the prisoner might be able to grab his gun...

So why in the f*ck don't they take their gun and lock it in the vehicle cab, then have your partner come and stand at the back of the van while you load the prisoners up and belt them in. Your partner has his gun in case anything happens but you don't run the risk of having a prisoner grab your gun while they are being seat-belted in.

The excuse sounds either lazy or stupid, or both!

They also said you could be bitten, spit on, knocked over, etc. One of the defense witnesses said something like "even the most docile of detainees can turn on you in an instant. It only takes getting bitten once, before you take precautions against everyone," or something like that.

I would have to agree. I thought the prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby, was pretty unprofessional at her initial press conference too. She shouldn't have bragged about what she was going to do. She should have just done it. Now that she didn't do it, she has lost credibility. And she committed really lame rookie mistakes too, like failing to turn over exculpatory evidence to the defense, as noted in Goldie Taylor's Daily Beast piece.
