Giffords helps start New Hampshire anti-gun violence group

Source: AP

CONCORD, N.H. - Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is helping launch a bipartisan coalition in New Hampshire aimed at preventing gun violence.

Giffords was badly wounded in a 2011 shooting that left six dead and 13 injured in Tucson. She spoke in Concord on Tuesday, a day after the third anniversary of the mass shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School. She says she saw great courage when her life was on the line, and that it’s now time for political leaders to be courageous and responsible.

The coalition wants to close loopholes that allow felons, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill buy guns without undergoing criminal background checks.

and nothing got done.

If I could say something to President Obama it would be this: the time for executive action declaring assault weapons, and the NRA, a clear and present danger to the safety and well-being of the American people, is now.

This suggestion doesn't fall within 1000 miles of what is possible through executive action....it isn't possible through exectutive action or through legislative action...it is akin to burning books in it's intellectual ideology....

Sometimes one just needs to vent - plus: having a conversation, however brief, with the President of the United States always makes for a great anecdote later on.

Giffords, Kelly start N.H. anti-gun violence coalition

CONCORD — Astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly said he has several firearms and has not once questioned the Second Amendment since his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot in Tucson, Arizona, in 2011.

But upon announcing the start of new organization in New Hampshire promoting safer gun laws, Kelly said he questions why loopholes still exist in federal law that allow people legally barred from purchasing a firearm to acquire one online or in the parking lot of a gun show.

“I own seven guns. I like them. I flew with a gun in combat in the Navy,” Kelly said. “These are rights we should all be able to enjoy with the exception of the guy getting out of federal prison.”...

...Even after his wife was shot, Kelly said he has not once questioned people’s right to bear arms. He said he’s thrilled when American firearm manufacturers like Sig Sauer and Colt have success in gun sales.

Neither will the NRA or Gun Owners of America. Personally, I'm pleased that
someone is finally proposing 'naked' universal background checks.

If it does what it says on the tin, I'm for this...

Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, toured seven states ending Sunday, to organize supporters in an effort to expand gun purchase background checks.

They have founded Americans for Responsible Solutions. Their goal is to expand background checks to gun shows and print and online gun purchases.

The group also supports a ban on assault weapons, high-capacity bullet magazines and reining in gun trafficking.

And this, as well:

http://americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/news/

December 10, 2015– Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and retired Navy combat veteran and NASA astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly, the Co-Founders of Americans for Responsible Solutions, released the below statement today applauding Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy for his executive order that prevents suspected terrorists from obtaining a permit to buy a gun:

“We applaud Gov. Malloy for doing the responsible thing and working to close the loophole in Connecticut’s laws that let suspected terrorists get a permit to buy a gun,” said Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Kelly. “But let’s remember that Governor Malloy was forced to take this commonsense step because Congress has yet to take sufficient action to address the threat of active shooter terrorism. Allowing suspected terrorists to walk into a firearms dealer, pass a background check, and walk out with a gun makes absolutely no sense. It’s time for our leaders in Washington to stop putting the gun lobby’s priorities ahead of national security, and pass the bipartisan proposal that would help keep guns out of the hands of terrorists.”

I cut them some slack for apparently not being stealth prohibitionists like Bloomberg's
various consortia are
