UT-Austin campus carry panel: Guns can't be banned in classrooms

Source: Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN - Concealed handguns can not be banned from classrooms at the University of Texas at Austin, school officials said in a Thursday report containing recommendations for how to implement the state's new campus carry law.

"Excluding handguns from classrooms would have the effect of generally prohibiting license holders from carrying their handguns and so would violate (the campus carry bill)," read the report from UT-Austin's 19-member campus carry working group. "The only possible way to avoid this result would be for the University to provide gun lockers at strategic points around campus. We believe this would be extremely ill-advised for several reasons."

The report goes on to note how requiring gun owners to un-holster and store their guns "multiplies the danger of an accidental discharge" or other safety issues: "The risks to human life of placing gun lockers around campus would substantially outweigh any benefits that would accrue from banning concealed handguns in classrooms."

The report does recommend banning concealed carry in several other areas, including on-campus dorms, single-occupant offices if the staff or faculty member wishes and "campus health centers, child care facilities, certain laboratories, pre-K through 12 school-sponsored activities on campus."

"The Working Group recognizes that allowing concealed handguns in classrooms may chill some class discussion and hinder the recruitment and retention of faculty and students. But it is also clear to us that excluding handguns from classrooms would effectively prohibit license holders from carrying their handguns and so would violate (the campus carry law)," the report read.

I bet it would. I bet I would never open my mouth or speak up about anything. I would be too afraid someone would take offense. Arguments do not go very well when people carry weapons.

not only does the kid have to worry about some wing nut having a gun in a class room, now they have some wing nut in the class room who just might be a wing nut-----------------------------the logic is just amazing.
Just get the good old vibe going that if someone has a gun on in a class room you are going to feel so much safer-----------------because that person has a gun...........................what could possibly go wrong.
This is the same right wing state that will not let the students vote in an election if they show there student ID, or have a drivers license, but any Tom Dick or Harry or Sally or Jane can bring a gun into the class room, because in this state you don't have to show a drivers license to get a gun----------------nope---------------amazing---------------- hows that fear factor going for you down there , better yet, how about the paranoia.

I just wonder if the university ever has mentioned as to what happened on that campus, heres a refresher:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/27/mind-murderer_n_1384102.html

And to top it all off, for example Texas A&M pays there entire sports staff for football over $4,419,360 dollars, just think a coach on the football team can now bring a hand gun down unto the football field, in fact he can have his headset on , clip board, in his hand, and all of the other coaches on the field and in the booth can have there guns and just to be able to pack that heat for defense, or in the stands for that matter, because technically the stadium is a class room environment------------------------how do you spell STUPID

Just leave the United States -------------------------------

When the OK Corral breaks out in PoliSci 155, how do they tell
the good guys from the bad guys?

It will be far easier for shooters to enter campus because they will
blend right in, and they won't hesitate because they're mostly
mass murder suiciders anyway.

Every heated campus argument will be a potential powderkeg -
add some alcohol - plus romantic rivals and jealousies, breakups,
sports rivalries, sports betting pools.

I think this is insanity. Universities from ancient times to the middle
ages are a place removed from society for thought and scholarly study.

and---------------- yes the setting for education is for society to help build a stronger society with education.

If my kid wanted to go to one of those universities down there ------------------------my answer is no-------------------you are more important than having a degree with a name on it from Texas and having some one anyone packing heat-----------------who knows what can happen--------------------anything-----------------------amazing

How about a crossbow?

These gun nuts aren't for the 2nd amendment.
They are tools for the gun industry.
