with typical Swiss understatement: no breaking TV news alerts although GVA's main newspaper le Tribune de Geneve (http://www.tdg.ch/) is publishing on-line updates. There was about a five-minute summary on tonight's TV nightly news, etc. Then they moved on to events concerning the whole country and the world.
Security has been stepped up at the UN and other GVA-based international organizations and at the various country missions to the UN. There are apparently armed policemen at the main train station and at the airport.
I traveled from my home near GVA to Bern today by train to visit Bern's annual Christmas Market, where everything was totally normal and I enjoyed the mulled wine and raclette. I hadn't heard about any of this until my return this afternoon - mainly because my anxious spouse who is currently in the US had been reading the TDG bulletins and called because he was worried about me.
There was no obvious stepped-up security on the train and no one traveling to GVA seemed concerned at all. My stop was the last stop before arriving Cornavin (GVA's main train station).
It's not that people here don't take terrorism seriously. They do. They just don't let terrorism rule their lives.
And they certainly don't run out and buy more guns.
