Donald Trump Solidifies His Lead, but Leaves Many Nervous

Source: New York Times

Donald J. Trump occupies his strongest position yet in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, yet nearly two-thirds of American voters say they are concerned or frightened about the prospect of a Trump presidency, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News nationwide poll.

The poll was taken largely before his statement on Monday afternoon proposing to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the United States.

On the Democratic side, the poll found Hillary Clinton is maintaining her 20-point lead over Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. The possibility of her winning the presidency in 2016 is only marginally more palatable to American voters than that of Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump commands the support of 35 percent of Republican primary voters, leading his closest competitors, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas (16 percent) and Ben Carson (13 percent) by a more than 2-to-1 margin. While Mr. Carson’s support was cut in half since the last time The Times and CBS News polled on the race in late October, Mr. Cruz has quadrupled his share. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida’s support stands at 9 percent, with the rest of the candidates at 4 percent or less.

Compared to Trump? There is no comparison, really. This piece makes it sound like it's almost 50/50...

Is that why she's leading and has been because she's not palatable?

Clinton has strong negatives. In a general election she will get out the vote for the other side. The poll also found Republicans more enthusiastic about voting in the general election than democrats. Clinton may very well win the nomination but in doing so cede the presidential election to the republican candidate.

5. Why will he have to have a fundie VP?

He hits all the points evangelicals actually want. Hatred of all the "others".

Saying he would need a religious VP somehow implies that the religious right are actually religious and care about religious values. They will gladly vote for Trump no matter who his VP is without giving it a second thought.

Deep down, he is most certainly pro-choice, and doesn't hate gays. He says he's pro-life now, but doesn't ever mention it. On gay marriage, he says he opposes it, but the Supreme Court has spoken. Sharp differences from Cruz, Santorum, or Carson.

Crazy Cruz intention. He is dreaming of a Trump/Cruz ticket. He has been kissing Trumps ass from the start.

No way would Cruz be playing for second fiddle. Not gonna happen in his mind. He's playing it close to Trump in hopes that, when he falters, he not only gets his support, but his supporters.

10. My guess is Cruz is doing both. Angling to replace Trump if he melts down or be his #2

if there is no meltdown. Cruz is Hispanic and appealing to religious fundamentalists so he would be valuable to Trump.

Keep things simple. Do whatever it takes to get voters to invest in their future, so we'll all have one.

independents are "concerned" or "scared" about a Clinton presidency and only 4% are "excited."

Clinton can win the primary despite this baggage, but she cannot win the general election when she is held in such low regard by independents (and 23% of Democrats).
