Canada's Trudeau to get red carpet treatment during White House visit

Source: Reuters

Tue Dec 8, 2015 7:59pm EST

President Barack Obama will roll out the red carpet for a planned visit next year by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, hosting a formal state dinner for the new leader, the White House said on Tuesday.

Obama and Trudeau met for the first time in Manila at a summit last month, and discussed a bilateral meeting at the White House early in 2016.

But the meeting will also include the pomp and pageantry of a state dinner, a lavish honor that the Obama White House has extended to only a small, select group of world leaders who have come to Washington.

Trudeau vowed to put a priority on improving Canada's relationship with its neighbor after ties were strained over energy and climate issues during the tenure of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, whom he defeated in October.

Harper postponed it and left it for the new guy. In the US, the pres has the right to supercede other authorities in matters of foreign relations.. Lots of diplomatic pressure from Obama. US petition with 92000 sigs. Can you imagine the outcry from citizens of Vancouver if Seattle pulled this shit?

But his Neo-Liberals will be all in for TPP which will destroy whats left of Canada's faltering economy, torpedo any remaining environmental checks and balances, as well as labor law and overall sovereignty.

Is it true that Trudeau supports they keystone pipeline? I'm an American and I'm not too familiar with Canadian politics?

"I'm an American and I'm not too familiar with Canadian politics"
That applies to me also, but I am familiar with the basics of search engines.

Justin Trudeau, who was tapped to become Canada's new leader Monday night when his Liberal Party won a majority in Parliament, has spoken in favor of the Canada-to-Texas pipeline. Still, climate activists predict that the Obama administration will reject the controversial project soon and that Trudeau won't fight that decision.

Unlike outgoing Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Scott said, Trudeau and the Liberal Party are unlikely to put any resources behind lobbying Obama to approve Keystone.

"Our previous prime minister repeatedly said he wouldn't take no for an answer. Well, I think it's likely the new prime minister would take no for an answer and move on and try to work on things that could be constructive between our two countries and rebuild a bit of its diplomatic relationship," Scott said.

"I indicated to Mr. Obama that I felt that it was important that Canada demonstrates a level of positive engagement on the environmental file on the international stage," he said. "I look forward to demonstrating that we have a Canadian government now that understands that the way to build a strong economy is to protect and defend our environment at the same time.
