Myanmar banknote hints at country's next leadership

Source: BBC

Signed by the three most important figures in Myanmar's recent history its being seen by some as a sign that a deal is being struck between Aung San Suu Kyi and her long time adversaries in the Burmese military.

Since first being made public on Facebook on Saturday night, a picture of the money has gone viral on Burmese social media. It was uploaded by a young man called Nay Shwe Thway Aung.

For the last few weeks he has been acting as an intermediary between Aung San Suu Kyi and his grandfather, one of Myanmar's most notorious and controversial leaders - the former authoritarian leader Than Shwe.

Ms Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), have so far refused to comment in any detail on the ongoing negotiations. I sure never thought it was possible. From Thein Sein to Suu Kyi... yes, absolutely. From Than Shwe to Suu Kyi... never in a million years. Ever.

Thein Sein's grandson is pretty amazing. Especially to have been brought up in the absolute thick of that brainwashing... I think Nay Shwe Thway Aung and Thein Sein should share that Nobel Prize, since Aung San has already got one.

I am so, so happy for the people of Myanmar that things have improved so much in less than four years--so abruptly and so dramatically, without bloodshed (except, of course, for the blood that was shed before). Thein Sein seems to be a quietly incredible person. I think he is sort of the Burmese equivalent of Jimmy Carter--a good and decent person who doesn't crave the limelight to validate his goodness and decency. And Nay Shwe Thway Aung... given how he must have been raised... there aren't words.
