Bernie Sanders to Undergo Hernia Procedure
Source: NBC News
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will undergo an elective hernia procedure at a Washington, D.C. hospital on Monday, according to a statement from his Senate office.
Sanders, 74, will return to his Senate duties on Tuesday following the outpatient procedure at George Washington University Hospital, according to the release.
The Vermont senator has positioned himself as the top Democratic challenger to frontrunner Hillary Clinton, who continues to hold a strong lead over Sanders in national polling.
Sanders is not the only 2016 candidate to make a hospital visit recently. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee underwent knee surgery last Wednesday and has returned to the campaign trail.

(15,719 posts)I had my hernia operation in my 30's. Most of my friends got them in their 20's or earlier from football.
I am 67 and I don't know any of my friends that could keep up with him without a cardiac doctor traveling with them.
Thank you for the post..

(796 posts)I never really thought about them in connection with athletics. Well wishing him a quick recovery. I have a hernia that the doctors have been watching for about 15 years....it's from a C-section incision. It grows a teeny bit each year. If I can hold out until I'm in my 70s to get it operated on I'll feel lucky!

(15,719 posts)showing off stuff that the younger set do. It isn't really all that bad an operation. Probably better when younger. It is hell if you live by yourself and have to take care of yourself. I could not say if sneezing after the hernia or bypass was the worst. Either one will kind of take your breath away.

(26,549 posts)That's why there's the "turn your head and cough" part of men's annual doctor exams.
Testicles start forming inside the body, where ovaries would form if the fetus was a girl. Then the testicles move through holes in the abdominal wall to their "normal" location and finish developing. That hole remains for the rest of the man's life, and creates two weak spots where hernias can form.
Kinda like the weak spot formed by your c-section incision.

(796 posts)Was no big deal although I was terrified. But my doctor told me just last year that they are very simple to do now with modern techniques. Obviously Bernie's not expecting too much trouble since he is planning to be back at work so soon.

(44,131 posts)Had something like this early in 2015. You are up and about quickly, but takes a bit to get fully healed. As someone else said, Bernie is a dynamo!

(14,176 posts)and I didn't know about the Huckabee knee surgery. I'm going to pretend that his idiocy post-PP terrorism is somehow related to being on strong medications as he recuperates, even though his constant idiocy doesn't merit a benefit of the doubt.

(Um, that's the kind of joke we told my brother when he had his double hernia surgery, lest anyone get offended. Bro had to tell us to stop because laughing hurt at that moment in time.)
