More deaths blamed on wintry storm moving through central US

Source: AP

DALLAS (AP) — A slow-moving wintry storm system that has been blamed for more than a dozen deaths began moving eastward out of Texas on Saturday but kept coating some states to the north in ice, making driving dangerous.

The band of storms that has been moving through parts of the Plains and the Midwest since Thursday has been blamed for at least 14 deaths, including eight in Texas and six in Kansas. A 70-year-old woman whose car was swept away by flash flooding Friday in Fort Worth remained missing Saturday.

Although the icy conditions were expected to persist in parts of Oklahoma and Kansas through the end of Saturday, temperatures on Sunday were expected to be above freezing in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, allowing the region to thaw out, the National Weather Service said.

After "a major refreeze" Saturday night, "we're expecting a much better day" Sunday "and Monday is expected to be beautiful," said Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Paul Braun in Amarillo.

Multiple people have died in fast-moving floodwaters in Texas as freezing rain and flooding pummeled the state and other parts of the central U.S. on Friday, with forecasters warning that the chilling weather would worsen over the holiday weekend. Hosts this mornings story only had 3 deaths. I feel there is enough new info for an OP.

It is headed this way again.

out there. I have holed up at home but since I have a farm with critters I have been outside more than I would like to be that last few days. More to come. Warmer by the end of the week though.

Driving west on I-80 just past Wendover, NV, I hit a patch of ice, slid off the road, hit a rock embankment with my left front end, and flipped completely over, landing on the wheels about eight feet above the road surface. All the windows blew out, the airbags inflated, the roof is partially crushed, the left front wheel looked pretty fucked.

The truck is totaled, but I walked away with a bruised finger.

But if my slide had advanced just a bit more, I would have slammed right into that embankment at the driver's door. Luckily, I flipped over it instead.

Then I had to wait in Wendover for a 1:30 AM bus that was supposed to get to Reno in time to connect with an 8:30 AM bus to San Francisco. That bus didn't get to Reno in time because the driver had to repeatedly stop and put chains on and then take them off. I finally made it home by Thanksgiving evening.

I guess I held onto the wheel the whole time.

I am duly chastened and rethinking my winter driving habits.
