Lengthy strike settled at Al Piemonte Chevrolet in East Dundee

Source: Chicago Tribune

By Mike Danahey

The very long, sometimes acrimonious mechanics strike at Al Piemonte Chevrolet in East Dundee has ended with the dealership only required to take five of the nine men who walked out back to work — and less than that actually doing so.

The nine hit the picket line outside the dealership along Route 25 for 16 months, and in early November the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C. denied the union's appeal made in August of a regional director's informal board settlement agreement.

A letter from the board's general counsel, Richard F. Griffiths, Jr. per the appeal denial states that "evidence was insufficient to show that the strike that began on July 9, 2014 was an unfair labor practice strike at its inception as argued on appeal. The settlement agreement fully remedies all of the alleged unfair labor practices found to have merit by the Regional Director."

"This merely enforces the original settlement from months ago. More significantly, it's the last available appeal, so this is the true end document," the dealership's attorney, Jeremy Moritz, said. "It was an unfortunate situation, and we're happy it's over."
