Peru lawmakers reject abortions for raped women: ‘We cannot allow this country to promote death’

Lawmakers in Peru on Wednesday dismissed proposals to decriminalize abortions for women who have been raped.

A legal commission in the Congress voted to reject a bill to permit abortion in such cases, blocking the lower house from holding a full debate on the proposal.

Women’s rights groups had brought a popular motion backed by 50,000 signatures for the reform, already rejected in May by another congressional commission.

“Whether we like or not, abortion is a reality and we must acknowledge this situation,” said Freddy Otarola, president of the commission. Most of his fellow members voted against the motion, however.

Peruvian women haunted by forced sterilization seek state apology

BOGOTA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Government health workers spent hours going from door to door to coax, cajole and bully women in a farming community in Peru's highlands to come with them for free medical treatment.

Esperanza Huayama, then three months pregnant, was one of scores of women who clambered onto buses that morning 20 years ago for the three-hour ride to a clinic.

Lying in a hospital bed, Huayama soon realized something was wrong - but it was too late.

Moments later doctors administered anesthetic and when she woke up, Huayama had been sterilized - victim of a birth control campaign targeting mostly indigenous women in the South American country's poor, rural areas.

3. They are operating on some abstract, absolutist, level of logic that is devoid of compassion.

They just say abortion is always wrong, period. Either/Or Black/White
No matter what the circumstances, abortion is always wrong.

In my opinion, abortion is not immoral or unethical at all, for any reason, if done within the first trimester OR if the mother's life is at risk at any point in the pregnancy. And that's a really reasonable opinion!

Other exceptions would be allowable in my opinion, because it is NONE OF MY BUSINESS what a doctor and a woman decide is best. Lawmakers in Peru are ignorant jerks, apparently.
