Pipes found in Yasukuni Shrine restroom may have contained explosive material

Tokyo~
Within four metal pipes found in a men's public restroom at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo after what sounded like an explosion was a possible explosive material, it has been learned from investigative sources.

Sources say the pipes contained various solids of different shapes, including some that smelled oily. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)'s Public Security Bureau has sent the pipes for forensic analysis.

The pipes had metal screwed lids and tape sealing both of their ends. All four pipes were bundled together, and one of the pipes had a wire attached to it. On the floor of the restroom was a digital timer with a wire, and investigators at the Public Security Bureau believe the timer and pipes were connected.

Security footage, meanwhile, shows a suspicious man in the area -- wearing black clothing and glasses and holding a bag and wearing a backpack -- starting around 30 minutes before the explosive sound was heard. The MPD is investigating a possible link between the man and the incident.
