NATO urges calm after Turkey shoots down Russian plane

Source: CBS News

The head of NATO is calling for calm tonight after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane, killing at least one of two pilots.

It's the first time the North Atlantic alliance has downed a Russian or Soviet plane since the 1950s.

Russian President Vladimir Putin insists the plane was in Syrian airspace. But the Turks released a radar image which, they say, shows the path of the plane as it briefly entered Turkey.

Russia may be causing problems but, in this particular incident, U.S. officials blame Turkey for overreacting to a minor violation of its air space.

This is going to be a huge obstacle to a unified approach to the situation

That was totally uncalled for on Turkey's part. Glad the US is taking this stance.

According to Turkey (if you are to believe a document leaked by Wikileaks), the plane was only in a very small area of its airspace for 17 seconds also they crashed in Syria not Turkey.

If its true that they were only there for 17 seconds then Turkey's actions were excessive. 17 seconds doesn't even give them time to look at their map.

I wouldn't want China or anyone else doing something like this to one of our pilots if they flew over a disputed region.

Turkey did not shoot down a Russian jet of Syrian airspace, NATO shot down a Russian jet over Syrian airspace. There is no way Turkey would not have acted without the direct approval of the US government. The question for Europe now is 'does either Turkey or the USA belong in NATO'. Clearly this was a purposeful act by the US military industrial complex to drive fear in order to fuel arm sales with a total disregard for the consequences.
The Russian and Syrian governments will likely now enforce a no fly shoot down zone over the whole of Syria. Clearly the USA has given it's answer to the Russian government for cooperation with regard to eliminating ISIS, 'they are our terrorists, piss off'.
Turkey did not carry out this act, NATO did, as a provocation, to fuel their desire for a cold war to ensure US dominance over Europe. The US armed forces in Europe and slowly but surely becoming a occupying army to force obedience under threat of arms.
