Russia Deploys Missile Cruiser Off Syria Coast, Ordered To Destroy Any Target Posing Danger
Source: Russia Today
Moscow plans to suspend military cooperation with Ankara after the downing of a Russian bomber by Turkish air forces, Russian General Staff representatives said on Tuesday. Further measures to beef up Russian air base security in Syria will also be taken.
Three steps as announced by top brass:
Each and every strike groups operation is to be carried out under the guise of fighter jets
Air defense to be boosted with the deployment of Moskva guided missile cruiser off Latakia coast with an aim to destroy any target that may pose danger
Military contacts with Turkey to be suspended
Sergey Rudskoy, a top official with the Russian General Staff, condemned the attack on the Russian bomber in Syrian airspace by a Turkish fighter jet as a severe violation of international law. He stressed that the Su-24 was downed over the Syrian territory. The crash site was four kilometers away from the Turkish border, he said.

(8,821 posts)I imagine Turkey got a good lecture at the NATO meeting today, despite the unofficial words of support issued afterward. Still, the Turks are ideologically driven (reviving the Ottoman Empire, and all of that) so they may do something quite unexpected.
Here's hoping for a dull tomorrow.

I assume China will share their new military base island with Russia. Since they're "best buddie" countries.

Russia was supposed to be fighting terrorists (that don't have planes) and now they are playing "cross this line" with Turkey and anyone else in the region.
Total Absurdistan at best, and dangerous war-making at worst.

(6,419 posts)& now they are on a war stance with Turkey because they can't work together with the international community and keep its fucking fighter jets within the Syrian borders and out of NATO airspace.
Pretty much exactly as predicted.
But of course it's everyone else's fault except Putin's.

(8,821 posts)It did so by intentionally attacking a Russian plane while it was in Syrian airspace (satellite radar tracking of the planes makes that much clear) and by killing a Russian pilot while he was engaged in lawful attacks against al Nusra terror targets.

(8,821 posts)Also, why can't you accept that Russia is attacking terrorist targets in Syria? That fact does seem to have been pretty well proven over the last two months, right? CNN has even used video taken by Russian attack planes hitting Islamic State oil tank farms (though they did initially mislabel it as film from American air raids).

Turkey has been arming Al-Nusra and those weapons are ending up in the hands of ISIS.
It is amazing how no-one is asking how in the world an operation that was selling so much oil for ISIS that you could see the line of trucks from space was allowed to continue to exist for 6 months and we only now bombed them after pressure from the Russian campaign.
ISIS won't last long once it can no longer hire mercenaries and weapon delivery is stopped. That is why Russia has been concentrating and taking a strategic approach.
Is Vladimir Putin right to label Turkey accomplices of terrorists?
Guardian
Turkeys international airports have also been busy. Many, if not most, of the estimated 15,000-20,000 foreign fighters to have joined Islamic State (Isis) have first flown into Istanbul or Adana, or arrived by ferry along its Mediterranean coast.
The influx has offered fertile ground to allies of Assad who, well before a Turkish jet shot down a Russian fighter on Tuesday, had enabled, or even supported Isis. Vladimir Putins reference to Turkey as accomplices of terrorists is likely to resonate even among some of Ankaras backers.
From midway through 2012, when jihadis started to travel to Syria, their presence was apparent at all points of the journey to the border: at Istanbul airport, in the southern cities of Hatay and Gaziantep both of which were staging points and in the border villages. Foreigners on their way to fight remained fixtures on these routes until late in 2014 when, after continued pressure from the EU states and the US, coordinated efforts were made to turn them back.
By then, Isis had become a dominant presence in parts of north and east Syria. It had splintered non-ideological factions of the Syrian opposition as well as Islamist groups, both of which had been backed by Turkey, and ensured that whatever form of governance that emerged from Syrias ruins would have little to do with the revolutions original goals.
The steady stream of foreigners who passed through Hatay and Gaziantep made little effort to remain discreet, gathering regularly in local hotels, coffee shops and bus stations. European diplomats alarmed by the gathering threat concluded that the Turkish leadership was sympathetic to conservative Islamists travelling to fight Assad, who had, until his brutal response to pro-democracy demonstrations in 2011, been a friend of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. After that he became an enemy, said one western official. Erdoğan had tried to mentor Assad. But after the crackdown [on demonstrations] he felt insulted by him. And we are where we are today.
