Police arrest suspect in shooting at 4th Precinct Black Lives Matter protest
Source: Star Tribune
Police have arrested one of the three white men who allegedly fired into a crowd near the Black Lives Matter encampment Monday night.
Minneapolis police said they arrested a 23-year-old suspect in Bloomington at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday. Police are still searching for the other two suspects.
Authorities are weighing whether to treat the shooting of five people protesting near the Minneapolis Police Departments 4th Precinct Monday night as a hate crime, sources familiar with the investigation said Tuesday morning.
The victims, all black men ages 19 through 43 were taken to hospitals with noncritical injuries, according to police.

(16,286 posts)or you brutally gun down another for talking back about jaywalking, and then you DEFEND this shit, you can expect stuff to follow.
The rabidly racist country, America, needs to stop it's racism which can be found in EVERY institution and EVERYwhere white people gather you will find it, EVERYWHERE
Not all white people will be guilty of it, but this is where you will find it

(70,242 posts).....Monday nights shooting has garnered nationwide attention. In New York City, people plan to gather at Washington Square Park on Wednesday evening.
Before the shooting, BLM had planned a series of events this week.
It has scheduled a news conference Tuesday at 1 p.m. to talk about what was discussed at Sunday nights community meeting.
The group announced plans for a march at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the 4th Precinct to city hall, the Hennepin County Courthouse and the federal courthouse. A memorial concert is planned for Tuesday night outside the 4th Precinct. A food and clothing drive is planned for Wednesday, and organizers plan a community Thanksgiving on Thursday.

(1,846 posts)A group (whose core goal is to get white people, mostly police, to stop killing them...particularly when they are unarmed) sets up a peaceful protest where no activists have weapons.
3 white guys shoot at the group.
If that isn't a hate crime, there are no hate crimes.

(65,076 posts)Since many terrorist acts are rooted in hate as well, i think this event qualifies on both counts.
There is clear intent to foment political or social change, or at least to stop someone else from achieving social change. Violence intended to intimidate others from driving social change is no different than violence intending to generate that change for one's own motive.
These punks are terrorists who committed a hate crime. There is nothing to deliberate.

(37,748 posts)Looking further into both the story, and the relevant legal definition, I'm beginning to wonder if charges of domestic terrorism may be applied validly along with any additional charges.

(31,849 posts)a hate-crime charge, which would require proving that the shooting was BECAUSE those shot were/are Black.

(37,748 posts)All things being equal, I tend to agree. That said, I can only imagine the hysterical framing the right, the right-wing and the white supremacists would then engage in. Those little fellas would go absolutely bananas over having "one of their own" charged and tried under domestic terror laws and all the consequences those laws engender.
On DU, I often infer from a particular demographic the sentiment, "please don't let a white person be guilty of this heinous act, that would invalidate my sweeping prejudices" and the breathless sighs of relief when it turns out to be a non-white person.
That this shooting will most likely go to trial will force far too many irrational people to deny their better angels. Zimmerman and his defenders on DU were small potatoes compared to this.

(35,619 posts)In 2010, Governor Mark Dayton (D) won an extremely close election (43.6% to 43.2%.)
In 2012, he vetoed a "Stand Your Ground" law.
If the Republican had won that election, then MN would have "Stand Your Ground" and the shooters in this case could use it at their trials. Because of that veto, the shooters will almost definitely be convicted.
If you ever talk to someone who is reluctant to vote, then you can cite this example of why voting-matters.
