Protesters call for prosecution of police in fatal shooting

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dozens of demonstrators huddled around bonfires Saturday evening, maintaining their presence at a Minneapolis police station where they have established an encampment following the death of a black man who was shot by police last weekend.

Minneapolis civil rights activist Mel Reeves said the primary goal of the protests is to see the officers involved in the death of Jamar Clark prosecuted based on statements of people who say they saw the shooting. He said the officers should face charges and "go through the same procedures that we do. We think they're guilty, but let the court decide."

Union organizers held a solidarity rally earlier in the day where several speakers said they supported the demonstrators' calls for improved relations between police officers and community members and the prosecution of officers involved in Jamar Clark's death.

Kyle Edwards of AFSCME Local 3800, representing University of Minnesota clerical workers, told the crowd that working class people are becoming aware that "we're all in this together." He led a chant of, "No justice, no peace! Prosecute the police!"

Protesters, led by leaders from the NAACP and Black Lives Matter, also have called for the release of surveillance footage taken at the scene of the deadly encounter early Sunday.

Gov. Mark Dayton said he met with Clark's family and leaders of the Minneapolis chapter of Black Lives Matter on Saturday. ..................

Or Spokane, WA making free speech illegal around 1913 or so.

Words scare the brown shirts.

The only way to stop this crap is to keep going at ad police departments and bad cops. When the behavior is no longer "normal" and leads to convictions and higher tax bills (justified wins of civil suits) - this will stop.

You can't legislate away the very people who are paid to protect us having violent sickos in their presence.

You convict and sue it away.

It doesn't mention police violence http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/worst-cities-black-americans_5613d10ee4b0baa355ad322f

But, I have seen enough to say that the cops here are out of control. I don't know about this particular case, but given that they shot Jamar in the head, I lean toward they murdered him.

As a person living here (in Minneapolis) I had NO idea that Clark had such a long and violent history or that he was being arrested for assaulting the lady in the ambulance. The media has not given a balanced perspective -at all! Like Jon Stewart said, "I think the media is lazy and sensational". This is living proof of it. Let the investigation continue and finish. Then draw conclusions. Shame on you people on DU who fan the flames -and don't think for yourselves. You are the sheeple.

The Lt. raises an uncomfortable point we don't want to confront. Of the 42 murders of black people in Minneapolis (this year), 80% were committed by other black people. How do we fix that? Black lives do matter, or do they only when it's sensational TV.

I think the answer is partially in the two groups of black people in Minneapolis. We (white people) see them all as one. But we have a very large group of Somali and Ethiopian people. They are almost never in the local news for crime. I think it's because they have intact families and support networks. We have many successful Somali and Ethiopian small businesses and restaurants. Apparently there is a lot of tension between "black Americans" and these new "black" immigrants. There was even a riot last year at a Minneapolis High School with hundreds of kids -except it was only between these two groups.

We've got to help people like Mr Clark grow up into a decent citizen who doesn't hurt people, not the thug that he was. No one's talking about that.

The law doesn't apply to the police? Also if all this is true why not allow the public to see the videos?

The investigation will continue. It may take up to 6 months. The findings will be presented to a grand jury by Hennepin County Prosecutor Mike Freeman. The process will move forward or not there based on evidence. You can't see any of the investigation or it's finding -including video- until after the process. Why, because it may taint the jury pool. The process has to be fair to everyone! Since you are not the judge, jury or executioner -you and I don't get to see it all until later -unless you're on the Grand Jury. Until then, zip it and wait. Then draw your conclusions. How would you like to be tried publicly by FOX news? The masses are such asses.
