Three men arrested in London as armed police close road

Source: The Guardian

Police have closed Blackfriars Road in south London after officers stopped a van and arrested three men travelling in it.

The Metropolitan police did not give any further details about why the van was stopped on the A201 on Saturday afternoon. The road, which leads on to Blackfriars bridge, remains closed in both directions – severely disrupting traffic.

At least one police helicopter is in the air and an ambulance is also on the scene.

A cycle superhighway is being constructed on the road and the police action has forced contractors to suspend work.

Note the mention of the "cycle superhighway".

The UK is building a network of dedicated bike lanes physically separated from traffic.

Boris Johnson was greeted during the opening of the first segment a few days ago:

However, a Scotland Yard spokesperson has since claimed the incident was not terror-related.

A statement said: 'At 13:44hrs on Saturday, 21 November, officers stopped a vehicle on Blackfriars Road at the junction with St George's Circus.

'The occupants of the vehicle - three men - were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. They currently remain in custody at a south London police station.

'Roads have now reopened.
