Eiffel Tower Shines Again - in Blue, White and Red

Last edited Tue Nov 17, 2015, 08:37 AM - Edit history (2)

Source: Toolito

After a black weekend in the dark, following the Friday terrorist attacks, the Eiffel Tower finally reopened, lit up in the colors of the French flag.

The Eiffel Tower was off for two nights, a symbol of Paris in mourning. At 18 hours this Monday, she was again illuminated, lit in blue, white and red as a sign of national solidarity.

At the request of Anne Hidalgo, mayor of the city, the tower will be lit from dusk to 1:00 am and three nights (until Wednesday, November 18 inclusive) with the colors of the French flag.

The motto of the city, Fluctuat Nec Mergitur ([the boat shown on the Paris coat of arms] is tossed by the waves but does not sink&quot , is projected onto the deck of the first stage (Trocadéro side) with a hashtag.

Beautiful, beautiful. How I love Paris. Read more on her ancient, defiant motto here:

Fluctuat nec mergitur (Classical Latin: flvctvat·nec·mergitvr) is a Latin phrase meaning "Tossed but not sunk". The motto has been used since at least 1358 by the city of Paris.

This eternal motto is being sprayed and painted all over the city as we speak.

The illumination included the defiant Latin slogan of Paris, "Fluctuat nec mergitur", meaning "It is buffeted by the waves, yet remains afloat."

"FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR" - It means "Shit on Death"

"Indifference", indeed. Also, read "mindlessness, heedlessness and apathy".

The self-contained, contintental bias is disappointing.

The Eiffel Tower darkens

Following the events in France's capital, a slew of social media posts incorrectly described the lights of the Eiffel Tower turning off as a sign of solidarity with the victims of the attacks.

However, the monument remains lit every evening until 1 a.m., when it shuts off until then next night, according to the Eiffel Tower's official website.

In 2013, a new light pollution decree ordered businesses to switch off interior lights one hour after closing and all exterior lights must be switched off between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. The decree was meant to decrease light pollution and save the annual electricity consumption of 750,000 households. The Eiffel Tower did dim its lights in January following the Charlie Hebdo massacre. Posts that depict the monument going dark for the events of Nov. 13 are not correct.

Eiffel Tower being closed and dark for two days and nights, during the period of national mourning decreed by President Hollande.

They showed it in its dark, shadowy splendor during that time. Don't know where CNBC got their info, but that's not the reality here on the ground in Paris.

they are probably technically copyright violations. The lighting of the Eiffel tower is considered an artwork, subject to copyright, and so taking pictures without the "artist's" permission falls into infringement territory.

Copyright is a stupid thing sometimes.

more propitious than the illuminated face of Kali on the Empire State Building.

Apparently, at one time, a Christian cross was affixed to its walls on occasions. Sorry, Surya, I hope I haven't offended you, as you have an Indian-sounding name. I know Vedanta is rather special, and was adopted by Aldous Huxley. But it is tragic for Christians to see Christendom and the world it created 'going down the toobs', while being celebrated in such a manner amidst all the anomie and anarchy.
