Schneiderman to lead multi-state coalition in support of public employee unions

Source: Times Union

By Jeff Waggoner

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Sunday that he is leading a group of 21 states and the District of Columbia in filing a friend-of-the-court brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to support the so called “fair share” or “agency shop” provisions in public employee union contracts.

The brief addresses Friedrichs et al vs. California Teachers Association, a 2013 lawsuit that could seriously damage public employees unions, court observers say.

A court decision for the plaintiffs could invalidate agency shop arrangements, which allow employers to hire both union and non-union members, but require that non-union members still contribute “fair share” dues that cover the cost of representation.

Schneiderman and Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen held a press conference Sunday at New York City Hall in announcing the multi-state effort.

They get better pay and benefits, they should pay the dues!

Union members earn better wages and benefits than workers who aren’t union members. On average, union workers’ wages are 27 percent higher than their nonunion counterparts.

Unionized workers are 60 percent more likely to have employer-provided pensions.

More than 79 percent of union workers have jobs that provide health insurance benefits, but less than half of nonunion workers do. Unions help employers create a more stable, productive workforce—where workers have a say in improving their jobs.

Unions help bring workers out of poverty and into the middle class. In fact, in states where workers don’t have union rights, workers’ incomes are lower.
