White House: ISIS has ambition for U.S. attack, but likely lacks capability

Source: CNN

Antalya, Turkey (CNN)President Barack Obama's national security team is sending a message Sunday that might lend at least a glimmer of reassurance to Americans traumatized by the terror attacks in Paris.

Saying that while the ISIS ambition is certainly there to launch similar attacks on U.S. shores, the capability is not great.

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters that one big difference between the situation in Europe and that in the U.S. is that "thousands" of fighters have traveled to Syria and then returned to Europe. That number being tracked in America is far smaller-- around 40, according to the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper earlier this year.

Clapper added that not all of those ISIS joiners were necessarily fighting -- some might have served other roles for the terrorist group, such as first aid -- and he knew of no terrorist plots that any of those returning have been involved in once back in the U.S.

They all seem to lack capability until they blow you up. You wanna be on record saying they can't do it? Unwise.

I'm sure there are those who will want to avenge those deaths and go out in a blaze of glory. Who in their right minds could possibly think that saying such a thing is going to calm anxieties.

Just give a few hotheads some assault rifles and have them enter a soft target like a shopping center or a theater and start shooting.

Where he said ISIS was "contained" we have to wonder if he is getting the best advice. Let's not forget the whistleblowers who said the pentagon was cooking the numbers in the fight against ISIS. The whole situation is sad.

in the U.S. within the next year, it will be the Democratic Party and its candidates that will suffer public backlash in his stead. Such blanket statements are not good, since events can go horribly wrong.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/oct/05/viral-image/fact-checking-comparison-gun-deaths-and-terrorism-/

It is also worth looking at the guns vs. terrorism deaths in the U.S. over time:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/02/us/oregon-shooting-terrorism-gun-violence/

And the world wide comparison over time:
http://www.businessinsider.com/more-americans-have-die-from-gun-violence-than-terror-attacks-2015-10

Terrorism deaths in the US barely register relative to everyday gun violence. Terror works by evoking an irrational response. If we are going to be afraid of being randomly killed, it is far more likely in the US that we will be killed by some American guy with a gun and a grudge than some ISIL idiot.

The Paris body count is surpassed in many American cities on a regular basis. So we'll spend trillions of dollars fighting terrorism, but somehow the 2nd amendment leaves us at the mercy of the real terrorists. We're all sitting ducks.
