Officials: No credible threats target US after Paris attacks

Source: Boston Herald

NEW YORK — Intelligence officials found no evidence of any specific or credible threat targeting American soil following the deadly Paris attacks, U.S. officials told The Associated Press. Still patrols were stepped up and added security measures put in place nationwide.

In New York, officers with assault rifles stood guard in Times Square, and extra security was stationed at French-owned sites in Washington and consulates in Boston and New York City. But elsewhere around the country, like at Minnesota's Mall of America, it was business as usual.

Dozens of police cars left Times Square with lights and sirens blaring Saturday afternoon when the New York Police Department deployed its "Critical Response Command" — officers equipped with heavy weapons and other tactical equipment — to strategic locations, including transportation hubs and the Broadway theater district. Officers with radiation detectors and bomb-detecting equipment were sent to subway stations where they randomly conducted bag checks.

"This is not the kind of thing that is a wakeup call to New York City," John Miller, the department's deputy commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, said of the Paris attacks that left at least 129 people dead and 352 injured. "We've been awake about this for a long time."

get one or a hundred (gun show, etc),

and we know how badly they hate us.

And we know there are some here.

And we know they are more than willing to die in the process (and they will), what is stopping them?

Something must be and I think we need to be reminded that our current government is working behind the scenes, legally we hope, to do just that.

Our government is inept and gridlocked to a degree that makes it more of a detriment to the people than an instrument of change for them. There is little to no hope of stopping a terrorist attack in this country that mimics the Paris shootings. Churches. Malls. Schools and Theaters (where we already lose people by the hundreds every year).

You go into public - especially in high profile cities like New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago or Los Angeles, you better keep your head on a swivel. I am frankly stunned that there are not weekly shootings and bombings all across the country. This country is not prepared for anything like that...we would shit our collective pants when it starts in earnest. Calls to close the borders are only the latest in a series of ignorant moves.

The police are already shooting citizens for lack of deference to the badge, how much more "enforcement" do you think a nominally 'free' society can stomach?

When will people start to look deeper for a solution?

We have been at war in Afghanistan for 14 years already...we have been militarily involved in the Middle East for decades with our support for Israel (*only to have them publically stab us in the back and attack President Obama and the efforts to make peace instead of war with Iran).

Its been 35 years since the hostages in Iran...its been 32 years since the Beirut Barracks bombing...its been nearly 25 years since Gulf War I and now getting closer to 15 years since 9/11. War and killing and terrorizing the populations "over there" have not stopped or even significantly slowed the spread of hate and murderous ideologies from all across the region.

Permanent war is our current policy.
The results are in on that approach. They are not encouraging, but what is less encouraging is the conversation that starts in the wake of Paris. Doubling down on a losing hand is the best way to lose everything you have...

Can green card holders? Can a genuine green card holder have his brother come over via family reunification and buy a gun?

On edit: green card holders can get guns ...and family reunification folks can get green cards.

THAT is totally fucking reassuring.

all the time. Not every station every day - NYPD moves checkpoints around. IOW, this isn't entirely new here. "Awake a long time" indeed.
