DNR checking alleged 'herding' of deer back to Walter Palmer's Minnesota land
Source: Star Tribune
Allegations of illegal tactics during this current deer hunting season involving land owned by Dr. Walter Palmer in western Minnesota are under investigation by state enforcement officials.
A senior conservation officer with the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said Thursday that allegations have been leveled of illegal herding of deer by pickup trucks that is sending the animals back onto land owned near Barnesville by Palmer, the Bloomington dentist who created an international uproar when he killed the beloved lion Cecil this summer in Zimbabwe.
We will talk to everybody involved and decide whether or not a violation has occurred, said Maj. Greg Salo, operations manager for the DNR. Its too early to speculate on the circumstances.
Salo said that if the allegations hold up, such acts are against the law.

(23,148 posts)I have a home in deep rural southeastern Minnesota and there's a meth head who is on probation who broke the law for more than a year, flagrantly (he kept pit bulls when he wasn't supposed to have dogs, let them run without a leash and they attacked neighbors dogs repeatedly, and he drank until blotto when he was supposed to remain sober) and nobody did anything until he threatened to kill someone and his dog bit one of the neighbors on his side in the excitement.
Point being, it might be very hard to get his neighbors to actually identify themselves in a complaint or in court, so the DNR might have to directly catch someone doing this "herding". And now that the news is out... seems unlikely to me.

(7,286 posts)There could be up to 50 deer per square mile on that land. He must be a shitty hunter

(39,909 posts)...to fool with. They are dead serious about protecting their wild lands and natural resources.
IF this asshole was herding deer with pick ups, and the Minnesota DNR is on his case,
they won't let go.
It is amazing the job they do......and they come out of nowhere.
You can watch the sun rise over a pristine lake way off the beaten track, throw out your line,
and within a few minutes, a DNR Game Warden will just appear to check you license, equipment, and catch. These guys are good....and very serious.

(5,586 posts)And you'll have more deer than you could possibly dream of.
It's illegal, and it's less conspicuous than a herd of fucking pick up trucks.

(7,286 posts)Sounds like a turf war between neighboring hunters. Hence the "ongoing issue" and personal animosity quotes
Not too uncommon for neighboring hunters to bicker over deer or anything
I don't know how you are gonna herd deer with pick ups around 900 acres...they will just wait til dark to cross the road

(37,748 posts)It sounds sketchy because you yourself do not know how to herd deer with a truck, or are there specific and relevant issues (i.e., particular points not pre-qualified with a "sounds like..." or a "seems to me...) that are are invalid?

(7,286 posts)Without boring you with blah blah blah....I have hunted deer in the Midwest for going on 50 years and have seen and heard of all kinds of shenanigans ( once my tree stand was destroyed by a rival landowner--the whole tree cut down on my property) ....also have read dozens of books publications and periodicals on hunting, and deer management , including the memoirs of game wardens .
To your questions I admit to speculation. I have never heard of herding with trucks ( hey a pun on words). It would be difficult. How are you going to know when the deer are crossing off the property?
As to specific relevant issues: 2 quotes from the story from DNR reps
1. "it's too early to speculate" lol maybe I should heed that!
2. " kind of an ongoing issue" leads me to believe this is a range war between the 2 neighbors. 10 years running and no citations. The DNR knows he is bad seed they will nail him
I think other nefarious activities are highly likely: road hunting ( illegal) , poaching, or most likely hunter harassment . Hunter harassment is getting to be a big problem....the other hunters are not so much herding the deer towards their land, but away from where the hunters were sitting. This has happened to me before as recently as 2 seasons ago.
