The Latest on Missouri protests: Sen. McCaskill weighs in

Source: AP

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill says the University of Missouri Board of Curators needs to "send a clear message" to the students at the Columbia campus that they'll address racism.

McCaskill, a graduate of the state's flagship campus, said in a statement Sunday that she's "confident my university can and will do better in supporting an environment of tolerance and inclusion."

Student groups and black members of the football team are calling for President Tim Wolfe to step down over the way he has handled matters of race and discrimination on the campus, and one black graduate student is on a hunger strike.

Wolfe said earlier Sunday that changes will come as part of a systemwide diversity and inclusion strategy that's due to be announced next April.

Senator McCaskill isn't backing the students!

Marta and I have donated to Senator McCaskill in the past. She will never get another dime from us. See below.

this has been going on for months and months already. The time to act is well past.

Mizzou also tried to terminate health insurance for grad student workers on campus this past summer. So they suck on labor issues and on race. The place is a fucking mess

And then he'll say he's going to "step down" to spend more time with his family and "help the university move forward".

I'm sure the whole dog and pony show is planned out.

He has a successful career before coming to UM. This isn't a gig he is doing for money. UM pays horrifically.

Compare that the compensation from his corporate past.

This is an ego gig.

This is not about money. He resigned without a golden parachute or even the pension he would have earned after 5 years.

until April 2016?

Let's see, that's nearly 6 months away. Woohoo!

That's what goes for addressing racism at the University of Missouri huh?

Where'd they find that president, in the bargain bin?

and then the task force, after months of boring meetings, produces a mealy mouthed, bureaucratic report that makes some vague suggestions.

Then the president waters down or neglects the recommendations, and nothing really changes.

That's how it works.

You've been on here for as long as I've browsed the site.

I honestly would like to know what you think the Missouri administration should do in order to address racial slurs heard on campus?

What's the solution, have the individual who says that identified and expelled?

I hear some of the most vile conversations and language ever spoken whenever I'm on a college campus. I don't see how this is becoming such a major point of contention.
