Bass Pro Shops considering offer to buy Cabela's, according to report

Source: Omaha World Herald

Bass Pro Shops is considering an offer to buy Cabela's, according to a Reuters news service report.

The report, published early Thursday afternoon, doesn't cite any sources. Cabela's didn't immediately return a call for comment. A Bass Pro Shops spokesman said in an email: "We are aware of recent media speculation and our policy is not to comment on market rumors."

Cabela's has come under pressure from a so-called "activist" investor that has taken a big stake in the Sidney, Nebraska, company, saying it will press for big changes to boost the outdoor retailer's stock price.

The investor, Elliott Management of New York, has said Cabela's should consider selling itself, or selling parts of the company, such as its lucrative credit-card business.

Years later, many moves across the country later, a friend for me about this wonderful catalogue sporting goods store that was not the high quality of early REI but more affordable.

Cabelas seems to have done well.

And I mean that wholeheartedly. I was in their store yesterday. I make about 2000 lbs of sausage, 200lbs of salami, and another 300 lbs of copa, lonzino, and pancetta every year. I was comparing their "commercial grade" grinder to my 1965 Sanitary Scale grinder. Their thousand dollar piece of garbage grinder is a joke. Their slicers are a joke. Everything is cheap, cheap, and cheaper.

They used to be a great store that took pride in the stuff they sold. Those days are gone.

My grandfather was a salumi maker from Torino. I keep the family in the traditional recipes. Someone had to do it. I was the one how had the interest.

...he dedicated a chapter to Bass Pro, Cabela's and Gander Mtn.
Bass Pro & Cabela's business models were to acquire land adjacent to interstates in prime hunting areas, plan mega parking lots and get state and county/local gov'ts to put in infrastructure for them rollback sales taxes based on "projected parking" lot numbers. Motels would be needed, restaurants, gas stations, jobs jobs jobs. BUT when did anyone see a lot with more than 2 dozen cars in it?

Basically the Walmart model of getting the taxpayer to fund your start up costs.

Gander Mountain's CEO refused to follow that model because he had some ethics.

Problem with corporate America today is fixation by executives and Wall Street on stock price.
Take care of your customers and your employees and the stock price will take care of itself.

You do good work keeping us informed, Omaha Steve!

Peace
